Bancroft, Klinger to miss NZ tour game

Western Australia opt for youthful team to tackle New Zealand in a two-day pink ball match

Western Australia have rested Cameron Bancroft and Michael Klinger from this weekend's day-night tour match against New Zealand.

Bancroft and Klinger were both overlooked for a national call-up following Usman Khawaja's hamstring injury, with selectors preferring Shaun Marsh for next week's historic first day-night Test against the Kiwis in Adelaide.

The batsmen will also miss a chance to play the Black Caps under lights in the two-day practice fixture that starts at the WACA on Saturday.

Quick single: Pattinson 'in a good space', but a risk

WA will field a youthful side captained by Ashton Turner, with assistant coach Adam Griffith mentoring the XI instead of Justin Langer.

"Bangers has had a bit of a tight hamstring for quite a while. It's been fine and he's been able to play with no issues," Griffith said.

"But this is a good opportunity to give him and some senior players a spell.

"Maxy was pretty keen to play but he's got a few niggles.

"You've got make sure these little things don't become big things."

The pair are set to return next Friday, when the Alcohol.Think Again Warriors host Victoria in a Sheffield Shield clash.

Both were considered by national selectors after Khawaja strained his left hamstring during the second Test, and was subsequently ruled out of the Adelaide match and the first Commonwealth Bank Test against the West Indies in Hobart next month.

Quick single: Johnson names his toughest opponent

Bancroft was named in Australia's squad for the postponed Qantas Tour of Bangladesh, while Klinger was overlooked despite having scored a mountain of runs over the past year for Western Australia and county side Gloucestershire.

"It's always tough when you don't get in and you're playing really well," Griffith said.

"Bancroft is a young kid and still learning the game.

"He's getting better and better and he's 23. He's got plenty of time left, that's what we keep telling him."

The same can't be said of Klinger, who is 35 and enjoying a late-career resurgence similar to Adam Voges.

"He's in career-best form," Griffith said.

"This was probably his best chance to get in there and he's missed out.

"But he's a great guy, very resilient and he'll keep giving us everything he's got. Hopefully for a couple more years."

Joel Paris, a highly-rated pace prospect yet to make his first-class debut, has been given a chance to rip in against the Black Caps.

"He excites me a lot. He's back from injury and gets the chance to show us what he's got," Griffith said.

Will Bosisto, who scored his maiden first-class hundred against Victoria earlier this week, will also play, as will former Tasmanian batsman Jonathan Wells, who was a substitute fielder during the second Test at the WACA.

Australia one-day spinner Ashton Agar has been rested.

WA squad: Tom Beaton, Will Bosisto, Ryan Duffield, Marcus Harris, Josh Inglis, David Moody, Liam O'Connor, Joel Paris, Ashton Turner (capt), Andrew Tye, Jonathan Wells, Sam Whiteman.
