Tasmania's Doherty announces retirement

Former Test and ODI spinner confirms the end of his first-class and one-day careers

Former Test and one-day international spinner Xavier Doherty has announced his retirement from first-class and one-day cricket.

The 34-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday after he was omitted from Tasmania's Sheffield Shield side for the last round of the season.

Doherty played four Tests, 60 ODIs, and 11 Twenty20s for Australia but hasn’t played for Australia since 2015 and has fallen out of favour with the Tigers in Shield ranks this season.

Quick Single: Voges not just an average cricketer

The left-arm orthodox tweaker was a bolt from the blue when he made his Test debut in the Ashes in 2010.

He was discarded like so many other Australian spinners in the post Shane Warne-era, but found his niche as Australia’s preferred ODI spinner for much of his five-year career in the green and gold.

Doherty was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 2015 after missing the 2011 tournament through injury.

He was part of Tasmania’s 2010-11 Sheffield Shield final triumph, while he also played in three domestic one-day title wins for the Tigers.

Quick Single: Bulls great Hartley announces retirement

"Receiving my cap for Tasmania as a young 19-year-old was pretty special and to go on to be called up for Australia in 2010 and claim that Baggy Green was a surreal feeling," Doherty said.

"I have absolutely loved being a Tasmanian cricketer and I sometimes have to pinch myself when I think about the opportunities and highlights I have had throughout my career.

"I feel very grateful to have been part of such a successful, exciting and important era for Tasmanian cricket and I hope to be able to continue to watch more success in the future."

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland paid tribute to the left-armer.

2012: 6 in 60 seconds with Xavier Doherty

“Xavier was an outstanding competitor who always represented Australia to the best of his abilities,” Mr Sutherland said.

“Playing in all three formats of the game at international level, Xavier proved he could compete against the best players in the world.

“Xavier featured in Australia’s victorious 2015 World Cup campaign on home soil, and should be proud of everything he has achieved in his decorated career.

“We thank him for being such a great ambassador for the game, and look forward to his continual involvement in his post-playing days.”
