Alviro Petersen is another member of South Africa’s top order who had to work very hard to cement his spot throughout his career.
After making a century on debut, big things were expected of the softly spoken right-hander but unfortunately for Petersen, a poor run of form left selectors with no choice but to drop him from the national side.
A move to Glamorgan in the 2011 County season resurrected his career, with Petersen topping the run scoring charts in all three forms of the game.
A sheer weight of runs forced him back into the national side, where he once again scored a crafty century in his first innings back.
2012 was a success for Petersen, which saw him in the top 10 run getters for the year. 156 against New Zealand was followed up by an impressive 182 in England. The two huge knocks sealed his spot in the side, and went a long way in silencing his many critics.
Petersen’s new found confidence wasn't limited to Test cricket. Although he didn't play an international T20 match for over two years, Petersen captained the Highveld Lions to the final of the CLT20 earlier that year.
Although he didn’t have the best of tournaments, scoring just 63 runs at 10.5, his leadership was first class in front of his home fans.
He scored five centuries in his 36 Test match career.
