The allrounder from Charters Towers, who has been described by coaches and teachers as a natural born leader, joined the senior contract list for the first time in 2016-17.
Birkett captained the Queensland Under-18 team at the national championships last season and won the Konica Minolta Youth Player of the Year award for her efforts.
While the young and inexperienced Queenslanders struggled early, Birkett led from the front and they improved with each game.
She was part of the Queensland Under-18 team the previous year that won five of its six games and enjoyed playing alongside her now Fire teammates Grace Harris, Jemma Barsby, Holly Ferling and Beth Mooney.
Birkett also spent two campaigns with the State Under-15 team, helping the team to win the national championship in 2010-11.
