Finch called into Australia's ODI squad

Aaron Finch has been called in to replace injured opening batsman David Warner for the remainder of Australia's one-day international series against England.

Warner is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a fractured thumb he sustained in the opening stages of Australia’s 64-run win at Lord’s on Saturday.

The explosive left-hander was struck on the left thumb by a rearing bouncer from England fast bowler Steven Finn from the first ball he faced and just the second of the match.

X-rays confirmed a fracture in Warner’s thumb and he is now in doubt for Australia’s two-Test series against Bangladesh, starting on October 9 in Chittagong.

Australia have replaced Warner with his regular opening partner Finch, who was not selected in the initial squad having endured a torrid time with injury since lifting the World Cup trophy in Melbourne on March 29.

Following the World Cup triumph, Finch headed to the Indian Premier League to play with the Mumbai Indians under head coach Ricky Ponting.

But a serious hamstring tear that required surgery ended his tournament after only three matches and ruled the hard-hitting opening batsman out for two months, impacting his county cricket commitments with reigning champions Yorkshire.

Finch, fully recovered, travelled to England in June to honour his deal with Jason Gillespie’s side, but it wasn’t long until the Victorian was back in the injury ward, suffering a bruised lung batting for Yorkshire’s second XI and then breaking his foot in a T20 match for the Vikings in late July.

After more recovery and rehabilitation, Finch was en route to Headingley again, this time avoiding personal harm to score a century for Yorkshire’s second XI and returning to first-class cricket in their innings and 126 run win over Somerset last week.

"It's very exciting to be back,” Finch said. 

"It's unfortunate for David Warner for me to come in under these circumstances, that's not ideal, but these things happen in cricket and it's great for me to be back."

Finch was one of Australia’s heroes in the World Cup, scoring a gutsy century in the opening match against England in Melbourne along with a vital 81 in the semi-final against India at the SCG.

The world's No.2 ranked T20 batsman, Finch has scored six hundreds in ODI cricket for Australia, and will be hoping to slip seamlessly in Warner’s shoes when he joins the squad in Manchester on Sunday for the final three matches of the series.
