Lara joins Gilchrist for exhibition match

West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara will play alongside Adam Gilchrist, Dean Jones, Justin Langer and other Australian legends in the Western Australia Festival of Cricket Twenty20 exhibition match.

The WA Festival of Cricket, held at Aquinas College in Perth's southern suburbs has revived the famous Lilac Hill Festival match that finished in 2008.

WA legends Gilchrist and Langer will play alongside some of their contemporaries from a golden era for Australian cricket, with Andrew Symonds, Andy Bichel, Michael Kasprowicz and Jimmy Maher among those confirmed.

The star-studded Legends XI will play a T20 exhibition match against KFC T20 Big Bash League side the Perth Scorchers.

The reshuffle of the Australian cricket schedule in the wake of the death of Phillip Hughes also affected this match, with it moved to December 15. The date change has ruled out Shane Warne and left Matthew Hayden juggling commitments in an attempt to make it.

Brace yourselves, folks … Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden are back.

Well for one match anyway, as part of an Australian Legends team taking on the Perth Scorchers in the WA Festival of Cricket Twenty20 match.

The Scorchers will begin their KFC T20 Big Bash League title defence with an exhibition match against a group of Aussie greats, including Scorchers No.1 ticket holder Gilchrist.

The match, which will take place on Wednesday 10 December at Aquinas College in Perth, follows on from the success of last year’s event and also features former Test pacemen Michael Kasprowicz and Andy Bichel, among others.

"The Festival of Cricket presents the public and corporates with a unique opportunity to not only watch a high-quality T20 match in a relaxed, social environment, but also to mix and mingle with many current and past greats of the game,” Gilchrist said.

“The chance to run around with a bunch of old mates and pit ourselves against the current BBL Champions is exciting and sure to be entertaining for all.”

The Scorchers have appeared in all three Big Bash League finals to date, breaking through to win BBL|03.

This year they’ve recruited former Striker Michael Klinger after losing fellow opener Craig Simmons to the Adelaide club.

“It’s a great opportunity for the Scorchers to get back into playing Twenty20 cricket after the one-dayers and Bupa Sheffield Shield,” said Perth Scorchers coach Justin Langer.

“It’s also an unbelievable opportunity for our players to play against guys like Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne.

“While it will be fun on the field and it will be nice for them to rub shoulders with them, it’ll also be fantastic experience.

“For the fans, they get to see the Scorchers for the first time for the summer and also get to see some of the greats of Australian cricket playing.”
