Test squad omissions will drive WA: Voges

Batsman says teammates left out of Australia Test squad will have a point to prove

Western Australia skipper Adam Voges says his state's failed Test candidates will have a point to prove during the side's next Sheffield Shield match against South Australia.

After securing a 162-run season-opening win over Tasmania in Hobart, the Alcohol.Think Again Warriors will lose Voges, Mitchell Johnson and Mitch Marsh to the Australian Test squad.

Quick single: Marsh steers WA to tense victory

It means a slightly modified WA will line-up for the match in Adelaide, starting Friday.

"We've still got plenty of senior players in Michael Klinger and Shaun Marsh and a couple of young guns (Cameron) Bancroft and (Marcus) Harris," Voges said of the group left behind to fly the WA flag.

"I know all of those names were probably hoping to be in Brisbane (for the Test) so I think those guys will certainly be really determined to do well in Adelaide.

"It's still a very strong batting line up that we're going to have."

Klinger was instrumental in the Hobart win, producing an unbeaten 202 and 50 not out, over two innings.

After Friday's Test squad announcement, chairman of selectors Rod Marsh urged the 35-year-old to keep making runs.

"Of course we've looked at Michael Klinger," Marsh said.

"He's got to keep making runs.

"Have you looked at Michael Klinger's batting average in first-class cricket? It's not as good as the other boys (in contention for the Test squad).

"Part of our selection policy is if you've got two blokes that are absolutely equal you go for the younger bloke, and I think that's very fair."

Shaun Marsh, who was also left out of the 12-man squad after being part of the Ashes touring party, will also be eager to score big as he takes over WA's captaincy for the Adelaide match.

Quick single: First Test Marsh's time to shine

Hobart was not a good stage for the 32-year old, who batted at No.3 only to be cheaply dismissed in both innings for 15 and one.

It coincided with his omission from the Test squad announced on Friday, after he was hotly tipped for inclusion.

Uncapped opener Bancroft will be another out to prove a point, after selectors opted for the more experienced Joe Burns to join David Warner at the top of the order for Thursday's first Commonwealth Bank Test against New Zealand.

Meanwhile Tasmania coach Dan Marsh is confident his Sheffield Shield side will not succumb to the batting weakness that characterised the team last season.

After Saturday's loss to the Warriors, Marsh admitted the home side wasn't good enough.

All out for 189 in the first innings and 217 in the second, it was Tassie's top order that failed, providing a reminder of the 2014-15 summer.

"It can't be like the last," Marsh said.

"We've done a lot of hard work in the off season to improve our game and improve our resilience when we're put under pressure."

Skipper George Bailey (63, 68) top-scored for Tasmania in both innings but his efforts could not resurrect a poor start.

In the second innings Tasmania's top-four batsmen contributed a combined score of 51 runs, with the top three, Ben Dunk (7, 14), Dominic Michael (43, 4) and Alex Doolan (13, 16) struggling in both innings.

"At the end of the day, not good enough, outplayed," Marsh said of the match.

"We need guys to be making some runs up the top.

"That sets the game up. And we're not getting it at the moment."

The Tigers will play Queensland at Blundstone Arena on Friday.
