Big names left out of England ODI squad

Selectors look to the future for five-match ODI series against New Zealand

England have named a 14-man squad for the five-match ODI series against New Zealand without five of their Ashes Test hopefuls.

Fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and batsmen Ian Bell and Gary Ballance, have been dropped, while off-spinning allrounder Moeen Ali has been rested.

Quick Single: New Zealand square series with memorable victory

While Ali will return to county cricket to continue his preparation against the red Duke ball for the touring Australians, England and Wales Cricket Board national selector James Whitaker says the future of the four omitted players in one-day international cricket is not over.

“We have opted to rest Moeen Ali from this series and he will play cricket for Worcestershire in preparation for the Ashes next month,” Whitaker said in an ECB statement.

“A number of players involved in the recent World Cup including James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell and Stuart Broad have been left of the squad for this series.

“It is important to point out that none of these players have been ruled out of playing a role for England in limited overs formats in the future.

“This squad allows us to look at a group of players who have performed well both at county and England Lions level in recent years.”

Irish-born Eoin Morgan will lead the squad that includes just one uncapped player in Kent’s Sam Bilings, while Test stars Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Joe Root and Mark Wood will swap the whites for the coloured clothes of the Three Lions.

Following England’s poor showing at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, England have opted for youth as they look ahead to the 2019 event on home soil.

The average age of the squad is 25, with only Yorkshire fast bowler Liam Plunkett over the age of 30.

Caretaker coach Paul Farbrace will coach the side before Trevor Bayliss takes the England reins prior to the Ashes.

“This series presents an excellent opportunity to look at players we believe can play a key role for England over the next four years as we build towards the next ICC Cricket World Cup,” Whitaker said.

“On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish Eoin and Paul Farbrace all the very best for what will no doubt be a highly entertaining series against a very strong New Zealand side.”

The first ODI starts on Tuesday, June 9 in Edgbaston.
