60 all out: Timeline of terror at Trent Bridge

In little more than an hour and a half, Australia were bowled out in spectacular fashion as Stuart Broad and England dismissed the tourists for 60 inside 19 overs.

On the eastern seaboard of Australia, between 8.06pm and 9.39pm stunned supporters could only watch on in shock and horror.

It was the quickest first innings in terms of balls faced in the history of Test cricket and Australia's lowest total against England since 1888.

Only two batsmen managed to reach double figures, while sundries top scored with 14, the second fewest in history to do so.

Below is the timeline of events - in local time - as Australia's chaotic first innings unfolded in dramatic fashion.

10.30am: England win toss

Michael Clarke called heads, the coin landed tails. Alastair Cook had no hesitation in opting to bowl but admitted it was "not really" a straightforward decision.

"There is green grass and good overhead conditions but it looks like a quite good wicket as well. It will be interesting," said Cook.

Asked what he would have done if the coin landed his way, Clarke minced no words. "It doesn't really matter, we're batting, so we've got to bat well."

11.06am: 1-4
Rogers c Cook b Broad 0.3 overs

Broad, operating around the wicket from the Pavilion End, straightens a ball angling into off-stump, takes the edge to Cook who accepts the catch low and to his right at first slip.

It's the first time in his 24-Test career Rogers has been dismissed without scoring, while Broad takes his 300th Test wicket for England.

11.09am: 2-10
Smith c Root b Broad 0.6 overs

Back over the wicket, Broad concedes four driven through point before pulling the length back to square-up Smith, taking the outside edge straight to Root at third slip.

Broad's 200th wicket in the United Kingdom. Smith had reached double figures in 16 of 17 innings prior to Edgbaston. He's since scored seven, eight and six.

11.12am: 3-10
Warner c Buttler b Wood 1.2 overs

Swinging from off to leg, Wood's delivery shapes in and continues off the seam, grazing the inside edge of Warner's bat though to a sprawling Buttler diving to his right.

Warner averages 10.14 in Australia's first innings in England, as opposed to 56 in the second.

11.20am: 4-15
Marsh c Bell b Broad 2.4 overs

Around the wicket, Broad has Marsh pushing hard at length ball which holds its line and flies off the outside edge to Bell at second slip who holds on to the chance at head height.

Marsh's seventh duck of his Test career in 26 innings. His average jumps from 34.36 to 47.72 when he gets off the mark. 

11.28am: 5-21
Voges c Stokes b Broad 4.1 overs

Pitched up, straightens off the seam as Voges plays down the wrong line and a thick edge is magnificently intercepted by a full-stretch Stokes at fifth slip.

Voges has 74 runs in the series at 12.33.

11.39am: 6-29
Clarke c Cook b Broad 6.1 overs

Loose shot outside off stump, Clarke flashes at a wide half-volley that screams to Cook who takes the grab high above his head.

Since the first Ashes Test of 2013-14, Clarke has passed 25 on only eight occasions in 32 innings.

Broad's five-wicket haul came in 19 deliveries, the joint fastest in Test history.

11.54am: 7-33
Nevill c Finn 9.2 overs

Indecisive, Nevill goes to play and leave, opening a gap between bat and pad that Finn from the Radcliffe Road End finds to peg back the off-stump.

Nevill was bowled in similar fashion in the first innings of the third Test in Birmingham.

12.11pm: 8-46
Starc c Root b Broad 12.4 overs

Facing Broad from around the wicket, Starc pokes at good length ball outside off stump and steers a waist-high catch to Root at third slip.

12.14pm: 9-47
Johnson c Root b Broad 12.6 overs

Mirror image of Starc wicket as Broad wheels in from around the wicket, has Johnson caught on the crease and edging to Root who takes a comfortable catch at third slip.

It's the first time in Root's career he's taken three catches in an innings.

12.39pm: 10-60
Lyon c Stokes b Broad 18.3 overs

Wide of the crease, Broad straightens a length ball to Lyon whose thick edge is taken by Stokes at fifth slip to end the innings.

Broad finishes with 8-15, the best bowling figures at Trent Bridge and the third best for England against Australia, behind Jim Laker's efforts in 1956.
