Agar a surprise recall to Aussie Test squad

Ashes bolter from 2013 winter receives surprise call-up for Sydney's New Year's Test

Western Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar has been added to the Australian squad for the fourth Commonwealth Bank Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Agar joins the 13-man squad that regained the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2-0 following a draw in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Quick Single: Aussies seal series win in MCG draw

He made his Test debut against England at Trent Bridge in the first Test of the 2013 Ashes series.

The then 19-year-old entered the record books when he scored 98 batting at No.11 in the first innings, combining with Phillip Hughes for a world record final wicket stand of 163.

The SCG wicket, which is traditionally conducive to spin, will determine whether Australia will pick Agar and play two spinners.

“We’ll see how the wicket is and go from there,” said Australia captain Steve Smith.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been keeping an eye on the 21-year-old, saying his left-arm spin and lower-order hitting could see him as a surprise selection for Australia’s 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup squad.

"I would actually throw Ashton Agar's name in there as a bit of a smokey,” said Ponting on SEN.

"I haven't talked much about this before but I was just looking and thinking about what they might do with a spinner for the World Cup, and we know that Agar's a very handy lower batsman and a good fielder as well.

"I think he's someone who could slot into a World Cup one-day side really nicely."

Quick Single: Johnson's ball of the century?

Agar has starred for the Perth Scorchers in the KFC T20 Big Bash League this season, taking three wickets at an average of 17.33, along with a stunning catch against the Sydney Sixers last night.

His red ball form for the Alcohol.Think Again Western Warriors in the Bupa Sheffield Shield hasn’t been as impressive, taking five wickets at 63.2.
