Aussie legends light up All Stars

Ricky Ponting thrilled while Matthew Hayden had an intriguing battle with Glenn McGrath in the second All Stars match

Australian legends Matthew Hayden and Ricky have wound back the clock in Houston with some big-hitting antics in the second Cricket All Stars match.

Opening for Warne’s Warriors, Hayden engaged in an entertaining battle with former teammate Glenn McGrath, sending the first delivery he faced from the legendary fast bowler to the boundary.

Quick single: Warriors smash 262 in easy victory

McGrath had already come close to pulling off a caught and bowled off his first ball, doing well to get his hands to a firm drive from Michael Vaughan, only to find his reflexes weren’t quite what they used to be.

Hayden then sent two McGrath deliveries into the stands of Minute Maid Park, driving a half volley straight back over McGrath’s head before dispatching the next over the head of Brian Lara at long off.

But McGrath struck back when Hayden chopped on his next delivery, departing for an entertaining 32 off 15.

Coming in at No.5, Ponting was quick to go after Shaun Pollock, smashing two sixes and three fours off one of the former South African skipper’s overs.

The Tasmanian stroked five boundaries and three sixes in his to 41 off 16, before Andrew Symonds also joined in the fun with 19 off six.

But the star of the innings was Sri Lankan great and Hobart Hurricanes recruit Kumar Sangakkara, who blasted six sixes and six fours on his way to a 30-ball 70, ensuring he will be one to watch when the KFC Big Bash League gets underway next month.

Another great of the game set to ply his trade in BBL|05, Jacques Kallis, gave the Sydney Thunder reason to smile as he scored 45 from 23 balls, including four sixes, but he was the recipient of a life when Sachin Tendulkar and Mahela Jayawardene got their wires crossed during a run out chance.

Ultimately their efforts with the bat – which featured 21 shots launched into the stands - helped amass a massive 5-262 for Warne’s Warriors.

The huge total proved too much for Sachin’s Blasters, although the little master did his best to keep his team’s hopes alive with a rapid 33.

Watch: Tendulkar's knock

Shane Warne wasn't able to replicate his man-of-the-match performance from the first All Stars match in New York, but the leg-spin legend engaged in his own entertaining battle with Tendulkar and Brian Lara.
