By the numbers: Younis goes global

Pakistan veteran Younis Khan features heavily in the best numbers from day three at the SCG

1 – The number of batsmen who have scored a hundred in each of the 11 nations that have hosted Test cricket. Younis Khan with his unbeaten 136 in the third Commonwealth Bank Test against Australia in Sydney became the first batsman in history to achieve the feat. He now has scored a century in all the 10 Test playing countries plus the United Arab Emirates. India’s Rahul Dravid also has a hundred in each of the 10 Test countries (considering West Indies and England and Wales as one) but didn’t get to play Tests in the UAE. The other batsmen who have a Test hundred in 10 different nations are Mohammad Yousuf and Mahela Jaywardene (missing South Africa) and Kumar Sangakkara (missing West Indies). Younis was already Pakistan’s only batsman with a century against the nine other Test teams.

Younis continues resistance with SCG ton

32 – The number of consecutive hundreds scored by Younis without being dismissed in 90s, the most by anyone in history. He has bagged a nervous 90 just once in his career which was nearly 16 years ago when he got out on 91 against New Zealand in Auckland in 2001. Since then he has successfully converted each of his 32 nineties into hundreds.

34 – The number of hundreds scored by Younis in Tests, the joint-sixth most by anyone equal with the legendary batsmen Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara and Mahela Jayawardene. The only batsmen with more centuries than Younis are: Rahul Dravid (36), Kumar Sangakkara (38), Ricky Ponting (41), Jacques Kallis (45) and Sachin Tendulkar (51).

39 – The age of Younis. He at 39 years and 37 days is the oldest player to score a hundred in Tests in Australia in over 32 years (since Clive Lloyd who was 40 years and 84 days old at start of the match when he scored 114 in Brisbane in 1984). Younis is also the oldest to score a hundred in Tests at the Sydney Cricket Ground in more than 90 years.

136 – The runs scored by Younis, second highest individual score by a Pakistan batsman in Sydney. He needs just two more runs to surpass Ijaz Ahmed who knocked 137 at the SCG in 1995.

395 – The number of runs scored by Azhar Ali in the series, the most by any Pakistan batsman in a series in Australia beating Mohsin Khan - 390 runs in a five-match series in 1983. Azhar’s 395 is also the highest tally by any visiting opener in Australia in a three-Test series beating Sunil Gavaskar’s 352 in a drawn series in Australia in 1985.

Azhar lifts Pakistan with gritty knock

4 – The number of times Jackson Bird has been involved in dismissing Misbah-ul-Haq in the series. He dismissed him in three out of four innings in Brisbane and Melbourne. Although he is not playing in Sydney, Misbah picked him out at deep midwicket where he was patrolling as a substitute fielder.

2 – The number of catches taken by Bird today which is as many as he has taken in his eight-match Test career. Bizarre as it may sound, the two catches in Sydney won’t be counted in his career tally. No one from Australia has taken three catches as a substitute fielder in a Test innings. It will be history if Bird claims one more.

3 – The number of wickets needed by Nathan Lyon to into the top ten wicket takers for Australia in Tests. With three scalps in Sydney against Pakistan, he has taken his career tally to 226 wickets and needs three more to topple Ray Lindwall (228) who is currently tenth leading wicket taker in Tests for Australia.

7.60 – Misbah’s batting average in the series, the lowest for him in any Test series. He has scored just 38 runs with a high-score of 18 at an average of 7.60. His second lowest average in a series is also against Australia, in the UAE and Sri Lanka in 2002. Misbah scored 69 runs at 11.50 in that series.
