Peirson, Di Venuto to lead CA XI

Queensland 'keeper and Aussie batting coach to face touring West Indies in Brisbane

Queensland wicketkeeper James Peirson will lead the Cricket Australia XI to take on the West Indies in a four-day tour match at Allan Border Field next month.

The 12-man squad boasts five players from the sunshine state, with Nick Stevens, Michael Neser, Cameron Boyce and James Bazley (12th man) joining Peirson for the December 2 clash in Brisbane.

Michael Di Venuto, Australia's batting coach, will mentor the group of emerging talent, with Bupa National Cricket Centre Head Coach Troy Cooley acting as his assistant.

It's the second time this summer one of Darren Lehmann's support staff have been given the opportunity to mentor a team against an international opponent after fielding coach Greg Blewett helmed the Prime Minister's XI and CA XI outfits that challenged New Zealand in a 50-over and two-day contest in Canberra in October.

The match will be the West Indies' sole hit-out before their first Commonwealth Bank Test against Australia on December 10 in Hobart.

"A newer look West Indies side will provide some great experience for this CA XI which includes a mixture of those who have represented Australia and some exciting talent emerging through state ranks," CA National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said.

"This will be a good leadership opportunity for James Peirson who most recently played in the CA XI squad in the Matador One Day Cup, and has also represented Australia in the Under 19’s squad.

"James currently captains the Queensland Academy of Sport 2nd XI in the Toyota Futures League and has performed admirably at this level. We expect this opportunity will allow him to build on that experience.

"James will share keeping duties with Western Australia’s Josh Inglis, who has been impressive in the WA and CA pathway talent programs.

"A number of the squad have represented Australia at various levels, most notably Cameron Boyce in T20 Internationals.

"Cameron impressed for Australia A in last year’s four-day matches against India A and this is a good opportunity for him to continue developing his red-ball game against the West Indies Test outfit."

"Players like Matthew Short, Jordan Silk, Tom Andrews, Nick Stevens and Michael Neser have been coming up through the ranks for a while and the West Indies side will provide another good challenge for these young players to impress."

The West Indies, who are captained by towering fast bowler Jason Holder, tour Australia for three Tests with the same 15-man squad that was defeated by Sri Lanka 2-0 last month.
