Willey signs on with Scorchers

Star England allrounder given permission to skip Lions tour to play in BBL

Big-hitting England allrounder David Willey has signed with reigning KFC Big Bash League champions Perth Scorchers.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have given Willey permission to miss the England Lions tour of the United Arab Emirates in December to play in BBL|05 with the Scorchers.

Scorchers coach Justin Langer said the big-hitting Willey, who in 2015 opened both the bowling and batting in T20 cricket at Northamptonshire, was a "really good package".

"David Willey is an up-and-coming, hungry, hard-working young player who will hopefully provide with some power hitting in the middle overs," Langer said.

"He offers left-arm swing bowling and has showed how well he can do that against the Australians in the one-dayers a few months ago.

"He's also a gun fielder and is renowned for his work ethic and character. It’s a really good package."

Willey has been given the all clear to skip the Lions tour from ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss, head coach Trevor Bayliss and assistant Paul Farbrace.

The signature of the 25-year-old left-hander is a massive coup for Perth who are looking to make it a hat-trick of BBL titles after falling short in the final in the competition’s first two seasons.

Willey, who recently signed with Jason Gillespie’s Yorkshire, lit up England’s domestic T20 competition with a breathtaking 40-ball century for Northamptonshire this winter.

The allrounder has played six one-day internationals and a pair of T20 internationals for England, and has been used prominently as a strike bowler with the new ball.

Son of former Test player and international umpire Peter, Willey played two ODIs against Australia last month, taking 3-51 in England's win at Headingley.

Former England opener Michael Carberry played for the Scorchers last season, scoring three half-centuries in the successful campaign which ended in dramatic fashion in Canberra.

“He gives us flexibility,” Langer added. “Especially at the WACA, if he swings the ball, you’ve seen the success our left-armers, Jason Behrendorff and Joel Paris, have had in the past, he’s going to be a real prospect.

“On some of the other grounds, he might be a power hitter we can use up the front of the innings as well.”

Willey’s presence in the BBL could open the door for more England players to be released to play in T20 tournaments around the world, including the lucrative Indian Premier League.

The IPL clashes with England’s domestic season, with only a handful of English players having featured in the eight seasons of the world’s richest T20 tournament.
