India elevated to world No.1 Test spot

England complete series win in South Africa that sees Proteas slide to third spot on official rankings behind India and Australia

Following their 37-run KFC T20 INTL win over Australia in Adelaide, India's day just got better after it was announced they are the newly crowned No.1 Test team in the world.

South Africa's whopping 280-run win over England in Centurion couldn't prevent a slide in the rankings from top spot down to third, with India returning the Test summit  of the official International Cricket Council rankings for the first time since August 2011.

Sandwiched in between India and South Africa is Australia, who can claim first place with a series win in the two-Test Trans-Tasman Trophy next month against the Black Caps in New Zealand, starting on February 12 in Wellington.

India moved to second on the rankings last December when they obliterated the Proteas 3-0 on home soil, the first time South Africa had been beaten away from home in nine years.

But a disastrous home series against England surrendered their position of Test cricket's best, losing in emphatic fashion in Durban and Johannesburg where the hosts were rolled for just 83 in the second innings due to a hypnotising spell of fast bowling by Stuart Broad.

Hashim Amla resigned halfway through the series, handing the captaincy duties to AB de Villiers who bagged a pair in his side's fourth Test win at SuperSport Park today.

It's a huge blow for the Proteas, and huge motivation for Steve Smith's men, after the ICC announced the prize money for the No.1 ranked Test team, awarded annually on April 1, has doubled to US$1million.
