Inzamam appointed Pakistan chief selector

Former Pakistan captain takes on head role after being released from Afghanistan contract

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has been appointed chief selector of the Pakistan national side, having resigned from his post as coach of Afghanistan.

Inzamam led Afghanistan to the Super 10 stage of the ICC World T20 in India last month, where they claimed an historic victory over eventual champions West Indies.

While Inzamam had signed a one-year contract as Afghanistan coach in October, the Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed they had now released him from that commitment.

"Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Shahryar Khan called the Afghan cricket board chief, Shafiq Stanikzai, and requested to release the batting great Inzamam-ul-Haq from his contract," Afghanistan cricket board spokesman Farid Hotak told AFP.

The Pakistan Cricket Board are searching for a new selection panel, while they are also seeking a new coach to replace Waqar Younis, who resigned earlier this month.

Last week, it was reported Khan had met with Inzamam about heading up the new selection panel.

"Shaharyar has offered Inzamam the chief selector’s position and also agreed to some points raised by the former captain who is now head coach of the Afghanistan team," a Board official was quoted as saying to the Press Trust of India.

"(Inzamam) has also asked for time so that he can speak to the Afghanistan cricket officials and reach an amicable agreement with them as he does not want to leave them in acrimonious circumstances."

That news was confirmed today, with the World Cup winning batsman set to head up the PCB's new-look panel.

It was also reported last week that former Australia players Dean Jones and Tom Moody were the front runners to replace Waqar as coach.

Pakistan rose to No.2 in the ICC Test rankings last year after defeating England in the UAE in November, but the same success did not eventuate in the limited-overs arena.

They lost to Bangladesh and missed the final of the recent Asia Cup and were then eliminated at the Super 10 stage of the World T20.

Pakistan will play three Tests in Australia next summer but their next assignment is a four-Test, five-ODI and one T20I tour of England, where they haven’t toured since 2010.
