Five-for-none in chaotic collapse

Hamsphire lose their first five wickets in space of 17 balls - including Aussie George Bailey - in dramatic county scenes

Hampshire suffered a dramatic collapse in their county championship match, losing their first five wickets in less than three overs.

Hamsphire had started their innings well enough, moving to 18 without loss after four overs. But then disaster struck in epic fashion.

Consecutive double-wicket-maiden overs followed, and Tasmanian George Bailey became the fifth victim to fall without a run being added when he was bowled shouldering arms to Jamie Porter.

Essex's Porter started the collapse by having Liam Dawson caught behind, then bowled Hamsphire captain James Vince middle stump.

Next over, Matthew Quinn trapped Michael Carberry leg before after he offered no shot, and Rilee Rossouw was caught at mid-on next ball. Bailey followed in the next over.

Hampshire then soon lost two more wickets in the one Ravi Bopara over to slump to 7-34. They started a recovery of sorts to finish the day 7-92 .

"I thought we bowled well this morning to take eight for a hundred and odd. Then for that to happen I'm just lost for words really," said Hampshire's head coach Craig White.

"I think there were some decent deliveries and some poor shots, but it is a hard one to analyse.

"I'm still a little bit gobsmacked to be honest. There's certainly a little bit in the pitch. It's dried out a bit and done a little bit more than it did yesterday.

"There were a lot of play-and-misses yesterday, so it was doing a fair bit, and now it's doing enough and it's tricky."

South African seamer Kyle Abbott was not out on 27, and while Hamsphire remain 268 runs behind, they at least had Abbot's third five-wicket haul of the season to celebrate.

Abbott could be in camp with the South Africa national squad who are in England for a three-month tour that includes next month's Champions Trophy and a subsequent Test series with their hosts.

But 29-year-old fast bowler cut short his international career for the financial security of a "Kolpak" deal with Hampshire.

Currently the leading wicket-taker in this season's County Championship, Abbott took his tally to 25 by taking 5-58 as Essex were dismissed for 360, featuring a hundred from former England captain Alastair Cook.

Elsewhere, Jack Leaning made an unbeaten 118 and paceman Jack Brooks a career-best 94 as Yorkshire piled up 7-421 against a Lancashire attack missing England spearhead James Anderson because of a groin injury.

At Lord's, Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara could only add one to his overnight 113, having celebrated the unveiling of his portrait at the ground with a century for visitors Surrey in their London derby with Middlesex.

Dawid Malan's unbeaten 103 left Middlesex just 17 runs behind Surrey's first-innings 313, with the reigning county champions having five wickets in hand.

In Division Two, Australia Test spinner Nathan Lyon took his first County Championship wicket.

The off-spinner, playing for Worcestershire, had Derbyshire's Alex Hughes lbw for 53 on a rain-marred day at Derby.
