Williamson seals record-breaking win

Kiwi skipper's 15th Test ton skipper consigns Bangladesh to history-making loss at Basin Reserve

New Zealand have pulled off a remarkable victory over Bangladesh, cantering to a win by seven wickets in the final session and condemning the tourists to a record turnaround defeat.

In front of a crowd of more than 4000 (entry to the final day at the Basin Reserve was free) captain Kane Williamson (104 not out) hit the winning runs with 17 overs to spare.

Earlier Williamson and Ross Taylor (60) had put on 163 for the third wicket to put the result beyond doubt.

After both sides scored 500-plus in their first innings, the match, even half way through day four, seemed doomed to end in a draw.

However, Bangladesh, missing skipper Mushfiqur Rahim after he was hit on the helmet by a short ball, were dismissed for 9-160 on the morning of the final day, giving New Zealand a 217-run target.

With their inexperienced attack, the Bangladeshis couldn't then halt a controlled onslaught from Williamson and Taylor.

The result is a remarkable turnaround in the match, given nearly 50 overs were lost on the first day to rain and Bangladesh's massive first innings total.

They scored 595-8 and bowled New Zealand out for 539, where Tom Latham's 177 earned him the man of the match award.

Day three: Latham drops sitter, Bangladesh pile on runs

It gave them a 56-run lead, but in their second innings they fell victim to New Zealand's short ball attack and some rash shots.

Bangladesh have now lost six out of six Tests here and must pick themselves up for the second rubber, starting in Christchurch on Friday.

They also now hold the unenviable record for the scoring the highest ever first innings total but still losing the match.

The previous record, 586, had stood for just over 122 years, when England beat Australia by 10 runs in 1894 in Sydney after being asked to follow on.

For New Zealand it is their second Test win in a row which seemed unlikely until the final day. In Hamilton in November Pakistan lost their last nine wickets in the final session to give New Zealand a 138-run victory.
