Mitch Marsh shines as Tassie set big chase

Test allrounder makes impact with bat and ball at Bellerive

News of Test squad selection along with a couple of Sheffield Shield wickets, backed up by a half-century with the bat, made for a good day for Mitch Marsh.

The same can't be said for brother Shaun.

The siblings played polar opposite roles at Bellerive Oval on Friday, where their West Australian team leads Tasmania by 351 runs with one day of play remaining.

National selection chief Rod Marsh said Shaun Marsh was one of an "unlucky" group to miss a call-up for Australia's three-Test series against New Zealand, starting next Thursday in Brisbane.

But the panel's selection will be underscored by the 32-year-old batsman's poor showing in Hobart, which included a contribution of just one run on Friday following his dismissal for 15 on Wednesday.

Tasmania had their own problems and were all out for 189 in their first innings by the close of Friday's second session, helped partly by Mitch Marsh's 2-31 with the ball.

Tasmania trailed WA by 243 and the Warriors could have enforced the follow on, but instead chose to bat.

At 3-33 after 11 overs, it seemed WA might have made the wrong decision.

Along with Shaun Marsh's paltry contribution, Marcus Harris (0) and Cameron Bancroft (15) added little.

But then along came Michael Klinger and Mitch Marsh for a power-hitting session.

After a double-ton in the first innings, Klinger quickly settled, bringing up his 50 from 58 balls and finding the Bellerive boundary seven times.

Quick Single: Weight of numbers doesn't help Klinger

Mitch Marsh reached his half-century in classy fashion, the milestone triggering WA's 4-136 declaration, setting Tasmania a target of 380 for victory.

At stumps on Friday, Tasmanian openers Ben Dunk (13) and Dominic Michael (4) had weathered 13 overs of WA pace attack to be 0-28.

The home side returns for the final day on Saturday needing 352 runs for victory.
