Not that the raucous crowd at the MCG on Boxing Day cared one little bit.

The cry of "Niiiiice Garry" from Aussie wicketkeeper Matthew Wade in support of spinner Nathan Lyon (nicknamed Garry) has sparked memes, memorabilia and thousands of imitations at grounds around the country this summer.

 

A Facebook group that has more than 22,000 interested parties gained traction during the week as they promised to all scream "Niiiice Garry" in unison from the third ball Lyon bowled in the second Test against Pakistan.

And as the off-spinner prepared for his third delivery of the morning session here today, thousands of fans rose to their feet and warmed up their vocal chords.


But their world record attempt was scuppered when Lyon caught the edge of Pakistan opener Sami Aslam, who popped a catch to Steve Smith at slip and sparked an explosion of noise around this famous venue.

The world record was gone, but Australian cricket's new favourite son had gained a few thousand more followers and cemented his cult status.
