Siddle seeking speed on return

Increased velocity could be a silver lining for Peter Siddle when he returns from an extended injury lay-off

An injury-enforced lay-off has rejuvenated Peter Siddle and the Australia fast bowler is looking to pick up the pace as he pushes for a return to Test cricket on home soil in November.

Having overcome back and ankle problems, the Victorian is bowling in the nets and hopes to return to competition soon after the start of the domestic season.

He aims to be ready for selection for the Commonwealth Bank Test series against South Africa, starting in Perth on November 3.

Quick single: 'I was almost in tears for the big fella'

"That's the plan," Siddle told reporters on Thursday in Hobart.

"I've started back bowling and the body's feeling good so it's just a matter of getting it all right and preparing before then."

Siddle reckons the rest might have helped him find some of the pace that dropped off in his most recent showings.

"Once they sat down and worked out how much I'd bowled - about a thousand more overs than anyone else in Australia in the last couple of years - it showed that I'd bowled a lot more so I was putting my body under a lot of pressure and it was taking its toll," he said.

"So I had dropped off (the pace) a bit and I think this freshen up has been great.

"I feel relaxed, a lot fresher ... and got that hunger back."

Quick single: Super Starc gives Aussies perfect start

The 31-year-old hopes to make his comeback playing for Victoria during October's Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.

"I've no specific date but both Shield games before that (November) Test series ... that's the time frame I'm looking at."

Months of rest meant Siddle was unavailable for baggy green selection, including in the current Sri Lankan series, but he is looking at the positives.

"I know that when I'm at my best I'm one of the best bowlers in the country and that's the good thing about this time (off) - it's given me time to freshen up and get the body right."
