Dual spin attack 'more than likely' for SCG

Peter Siddle injury paves way for Steve O'Keefe, Scott Boland also in the frame for New Year's Test

Spinner Steve O'Keefe will "more than likely" be called in to Australia's XI for the Sydney Test against the West Indies, according to coach Darren Lehmann.

And uncapped quick Scott Boland is also in line for a debut, with Lehmann rating fast-bowler Peter Siddle a "doubtful" starter for the match at the SCG, while Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson will both be closely monitored over the coming days.

Siddle was hampered by an ankle injury during Australia's victory in the Boxing Day Test, spending some time off the field and bowling just nine overs on Tuesday.

With just five days until the start of the SCG Test on Sunday, Australia's quicks face the difficult task of sufficiently recovering in time after the West Indies defied the home side for a total of 189 overs at the MCG.

While Siddle is likely to miss out, there are also concerns over the workloads of Hazlewood and Pattinson.

Hazlewood sent down 41 wicketless overs in the Melbourne and having played all five of Australia's Tests this summer, he may be in line for a rest with a two-Test tour of New Zealand just six weeks away.

"Peter Siddle would be doubtful, I would think," Lehmann told cricket.com.au's post-game show Stumps.

"We'll wait to see what happens with his ankle and the medicos there.

"We'll see how Josh Hazlewood pulls up; he's been a bit stiff and sore, as has James Pattinson so we're going to have to work out what we do there.

"We're more than likely to play two spinners with the way the (SCG) wicket has been spinning this year.

"But it depends - once we get there and assess conditions with the wicket and the weather.

"And we've obviously got Scott Boland with us now so we've got options there. We just have to make sure they're all 100 per cent fit to go. If they're not, we won't play them."

With Australia's bowling stocks stretched thin, the performance of allrounder Mitchell Marsh with the ball in Melbourne will be a significant boost.

The right-armer claimed career-best figures of 4-61 on the final day at the MCG, bowling with impressive pace and movement.

"He ran in hard today," Lehmann said. "It's probablty the fastest he's bowled all summer.

"He challenged their batsmen and brings a different feel as a bowler.

"He reverses it, he hits the deck and he can bowl bouncers. You need that on types of wickets like this and he provides that.

"As a fourth (fast-bowling) bowling option, and considering Peter Siddle is quite sore, he ended up being a third option today."
