Smith picks his 12 for Windies ODI

Finch and Khawaja both included but make-up of attack to be decided ahead of pitch inspection

Australia captain Steve Smith has announced a 12-man squad for his side's opening one-day international tri-series match against the West Indies and will wait until early Monday morning (AEST) before finalising the XI.

Smith revealed on Sunday that George Bailey, Travis Head, Nathan Coulter-Nile and James Faulkner will all miss the match at Providence Stadium in Guyana, a near sell-out crowd expected with the locals buoyed by their side's win in the series opener against South Africa on Saturday.

Quick Single: Narine and Pollard too hot for Proteas

Smith said the Aussies will wait for one final pitch inspection before play on Monday until deciding whether to go with two frontline spinners, Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon, or one spinner and a three-man pace attack comprising of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland.

Smith gave no indication of the main candidates to drop out of the squad, but confirmed opener Aaron Finch would partner David Warner at the top of the order, with Usman Khawaja to bat at No.3.

Australia's coaching staff and several players took a close look at the centre wicket before the team's final training session on Sunday, the pitch for Monday's match different to the strip used for the opening game between the Windies and the Proteas.

Spin played a major role in Saturday's contest, with 12 of the 16 wickets falling to the turning ball and Windies tweaker Sunil Narine claiming career-best figures of 6-27.

Smith expects more of the same on Monday, but added the fast men still had a role to play.

"It was nice to see the game yesterday," he said. "Obviously it's a different wicket but I think conditions will be pretty similar.

"We'll have another look in the morning and see how we go.

"I think for this wicket we've got a good mix; guys who can penetrate the wicket quite hard and hit good areas, a couple of spinners and guys who can bowl a lot of cutters, which are going to work well on that wicket. So I think we've got the balance right for the first game."

Quick Single: I've got the hunger back, warns Starc

Countering Narine, who is playing his first series for the West Indies since he was banned for an illegal bowling action five months ago, will be a major factor in Australia's chances of victory.

And Smith said his star-studded batting line-up would need to be "smart" and shelve their attacking instincts at times in conditions that are unlikely to be conducive to high scoring.

"I think it's about each individual batter having a plan against him," the skipper said of Narine, who hasn't played against Australia since the 2014 ICC World T20.

"He's a quality bowler with a different set of skills than we're used to seeing, (but) a lot of guys have seen him now and know what he brings to the table.

"It's probably not going to be really high-scoring games, particularly in the middle overs against the spinners.

"It's about making sure we're able to rotate the strike and if we get a bad ball to put it away. In Australia, where the bounce is consistent and the ball doesn't spin a great deal, you can hit through the line and take the game on a little bit more.

"It's about making sure we're smart with our skills.

"It looks like it's going to be one of those wickets where the new ball is the easiest time to bat and then the wicket slows up and gets a little bit harder to score.

"So if we try and make the most of those first 6-10 overs, hopefully that can hold us in good stead for the rest of the innings."

With several players returning from injury for this series, headlined by Mitchell Starc and also including Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and the skipper himself, caretaker coach Justin Langer has stressed the importance of managing players ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka in July and August.

And with Smith confirming all members of the squad are fit and available for selection, changes are on the cards for the upcoming matches in St Kitts and Barbados.

"We just think this is the best 12 for this particular game and this particular opposition," he said.

"Nothing to do with anything else, it's just what we think is going to win us tomorrow's game."

Australia's match against the Windies on Monday will be followed by another in Georgetown on Wednesday morning (AEST) against South Africa before they head to the St Kitts capital Basseterre.
