Trans-Tasman rivals look to 2011

Nail-biting finish in Hobart to provide spark for both Australia and New Zealand ahead of the day-night Test

Australia and New Zealand are both drawing on performances from 2011 as they prepare for the inaugural day-night Test.

Mike Hesson wasn't coaching NZ four years ago, when the Blackcaps recorded a nail-biting victory in Hobart to level the previous trans-Tasman Test series at 1-1.

However, Hesson pointed to the result as proof that Australia could crack if the tourists are able to get on top in the clash that starts on Friday.

"There are a number of players who played in that (Hobart Test)," Hesson said.

"So we know that Australia are vulnerable like everybody else when you put them under pressure.

"As a batting unit we haven't been able to put them under pressure yet so once we do that, we'll find out how they respond."

Quick single: McCullum's nice guys no longer running last

David Warner famously carried his bat at Bellerive in 2011, when his side failed to chase down 240.

The hosts suffered a collapse of 7-74, with Doug Bracewell running rampant.

The defeat still burns James Pattinson, however the express paceman can take heart from his form in that two-Test series.

Pattinson grabbed a five-wicket haul on debut in Brisbane then another in Hobart.

At age 21, he dismissed both Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor for ducks as NZ collapsed to 5-28 at the Gabba.

"Obviously those memories stay in your mind forever," Pattinson said.

"I still remember that like it was yesterday. They're great memories and you can definitely look back on those sort of things for inspiration."

Pattinson suggested the Blackcaps have come a long way since.

"They've been fantastic over the last year or so," he said.

"I think it (bowling to NZ batsmen) is all about keeping it pretty basic ... trying to put as much pressure on them and not making it easy for them."

Quick single: Green seam could turn Test on its Head

Warner noted it was "quite tough" to hear NZ celebrate at Bellerive in 2011.

"We take those memories into this game. It would mean a lot to us if we can get up here in Adelaide," Warner said.

Australia's vice-captain added it felt like a series defeat then - and the same would be true if NZ manage to draw the three-Test series by winning the pink-ball clash at Adelaide Oval.

"We would consider that as a loss because we've played so well," Warner said.
