Khawaja reveals one-day ambition

Classy top-order batsman wants to return to Australia's 50-over outfit following the Test series against the West Indies

First it was the Test team, now it's the one-day international XI that Usman Khawaja aims to break back into this summer.

Khawaja exploded on his return to the Test outfit at the start of the international season, scoring his maiden century in the Baggy Green in Brisbane and backing it up a week later with 121 in Perth.

But a hamstring injury in the field at the WACA Ground halted his resurgence for Australia, forcing the elegant left-hander to miss the historic day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval and the first match in the Frank Worrall Trophy in Hobart starting Thursday.

Khawaja, 28, will use a quick-fire stint with Sydney Thunder in the rock'n'roll KFC Big Bash League to prove his fitness for the Boxing Day Test, and is looking further ahead to the limited-overs leg of the summer to add to his three ODI appearances.

Outstanding form for the myFootDr Queensland Bulls in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup over a number of seasons and a prolific one-day tri-series for Australia A in August wasn't enough for the national selectors to recall Khawaja for the white-ball tour of the British Isles that followed the Ashes this winter.

While disappointed, the setback fuelled Khawaja's fire to feature in the coloured clothes for his country for the first time since February 2013.

"I talked to selectors (about missing the England tour) and I think at the end of the day they just weren’t fully comfortable with me at the time coming back from my knee injury," Khawaja told News Corp.

"I felt like I was ready to play but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

"I was disappointed but I moved on pretty quick … you figure out a way to get past ups and downs.

"But at the same time I really want to play one-day cricket for Australia. It’s one of those goals I’ve had for a while and it will remain one of those goals even though I’m playing Test cricket right now.

"Obviously my first and foremost right now is trying to get myself fit if I get the opportunity to play these last couple of Test matches … but at the same time moving forward I want to play as many forms of the game for Australia as I can, I don’t want to limit myself.

"Hopefully the opportunity will arise because I love playing white ball cricket."

Australia's Test team saw five changes during or after the Ashes through retirements and injuries, and Mitchell Johnson followed suit after two Tests against New Zealand. Likewise, Australia's ODI side is now also going through a transitional phase under new full-time skipper Steve Smith following the World Cup triumph in March.

Only four players from the XI that beat New Zealand to win Australia their fifth world title featured in the side that defeated England at Old Trafford in September.

Despite the turnover in personnel, Khawaja may have a tough task on his hands finding a way into a top order likely to boast David Warner, Aaron Finch, Smith and George Bailey, followed by Australia's surplus of allrounders.
