The best male and female Indigenous cricketers from across Australia are headed to Alice Springs for the national all-Indigenous cricket carnival, the Imparja Cup.

Interesting. Tell me more…

The Imparja Cup is Australian Cricket’s national Indigenous tournament. It’s into its 22nd year, having grown from a two-team local competition between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek into a national event.

The week-long tournament brings together more than 500 players representing states and territories, major centres, communities and schools.

How does it work?

Seven states and territories compete for the Imparja Cup in the men’s competition, with only ACT without a team.

The teams compete in a series of Twenty20 matches which culminate in semi-finals on Friday and the final on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s division, also Twenty20 format, starts Wednesday and features NT, WA, NSW and Victoria. The women’s final also takes place on Saturday.

Major centres, community and schools divisions make up the rest of the competition.

When and where is it?

February 8-15, Alice Springs.

Who’s playing?

Five KFC T20 Big Bash League rookies will be in Alice Springs for the 2015 Imparja Cup: Josh Eaton (Melbourne Stars), Brett Russell (Sydney Sixers), Brendan Doggett (Brisbane Heat), Ayden McGregor-Baptista (Adelaide Strikers) and Michael Bailey (Perth Scorchers).

A couple of others, Ryan Lees (Hobart Hurricanes) and Jonte Pattison (Sydney Thunder), are late withdrawals due to Futures League and Australia under-19 duties, respectively.

Commonwealth Bank Shooting Star Ash Gardner will take the field for the NSW women, taking on WA’s Samara Williams, who was her teammate in the national development squad late last year.
