Brilliant Amla powers Punjab to IPL win

Star South African among the runs again as Kings XI snap a four-game losing streak

The result: Kings XI Punjab 7-188 (Amla 65, Tye 2-35) beat Gujarat Lions 7-162 (Karthik 58no, Cariappa 2-24) by 26 runs

The match in a tweet: Amla the magnificent! The South African keeps his purple patch and the orange cap with a terrific knock as KXIP snapped their losing streak

The main attraction: Veteran Proteas batsman Hashim Amla backed up his last-start century with a sparkling 40-ball 65 at the top of the order on Sunday. After gracefully stroking his first ball to the rope, the IPL’s leading run-scorer sent another eight balls to the boundary and one over it in a masterful knock.

The contentious catch: Victoria teammates Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis were at the centre of a catch that required multiple replays to determine the outcome. Finch went down on one knee attempting to lift Mohit Sharma over the off-side, but instead picked out a diving Stoinis at cover. The fielder was unsure whether it was a clean catch and signalled so to the umpires, who called for the third umpire to check whether ball hit turf. After several minutes reviewing the footage, the soft signal of out was upheld to see Finch depart for 13 from 12 balls.

The all-round display: Axar Patel was damaging with both bat and ball in Rajkot. He first put the icing on the cake in Punjab’s first innings with 34 from 17 balls, including three fours and two sixes. He then followed it up with the ball, removing dangerous duo Suresh Raina and West Indian Dwayne Smith. If not for Amla’s heroics, Patel would have had a strong claim as the man of the match.

The Aussies: Kings XI skipper Glenn Maxwell made a quick-fire 31 from 18 balls – three maximums in his innings – while Shaun Marsh made 30 from 24 balls. Marsh was undone by Andrew Tye, who claimed 2-35 including the wicket of Stoinis for seven.

The wash-up: Maxwell’s men host David Warner and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday while Gujarat travel to Bangalore for a bottom-of-the-table clash with Royal Challengers.
