Warriors wrap up thumping win

The Tigers had no answers as Western Australia completed a nine-wicket win in under three days in Hobart

Western Australia have secured a thumping nine-wicket Sheffield Shield win over Tasmania.

Chasing a miserly 54 in their second innings for victory at Bellerive Oval on Sunday, visiting batsman Hilton Cartwright helped get the job done in less than 40 minutes.

The Warriors never looked in doubt during the match which lasted less than three of its scheduled four days.

Replay all of Tasmania's wickets

Just after lunch, with Tasmania 7-119 and still 93 runs in deficit, it seemed unlikely WA would need to bat again.

But an innings top-score of 75 by No.9 Simon Milenko helped the home side to 265, as paceman David Moody took his equal best first-class figures of 4-45.

After the changeover opener Cameron Bancroft blasted four boundaries and made a quick-fire 21 before being caught behind, with No.3 Cartwright then joining Jonathon Wells with 10 overs needed to chase down the target.

Moody shines with four wickets

Thanks to three boundaries and two sixes by Cartwright, WA finished the match at 1-57.

The result is the Warriors' third successive Shield win and should propel the side out of second-last place on the competition ladder.

Milenko's beauty for Tasmania

A five-wicket haul by Shield debutant Cameron Green and 4-57 by Simon Mackin during Tasmania's first innings of 198 laid a solid foundation for the Warriors.

Four half-centuries by Western Australia's batsmen including a top-score of 94 by Cartwright saw them reply with a healthy 410.

Skipper George Bailey was the leading scorer for Tasmania in the first innings but his 75 did little to ease the side's pain.

With just one win from seven contests this season, Tasmania are firmly in the cellar.
