Broad fined for fiery removal of Pant

England quick's send-off of Indian debutant proves costly, with ICC deeming it to have breached a code of conduct

England's Stuart Broad has been fined and disciplined by the International Cricket Council for his send-off of Rishabh Pant during the ongoing third Test against India at Trent Bridge, the global governing body said Tuesday.

Broad dismissed debutant wicketkeeper Pant for 24 in India's first innings on Sunday and was deemed by umpires Marais Erasmus and Chris Gaffaney to have "walked towards the batsman and spoke in an aggressive manner".

Broad admitted breaching the ICC's code of conduct and was fined 15 percent of his match fee by match referee Jeff Crowe.

The fast bowler, whose father Chris Broad is himself an ICC match referee, as well as a former England opening batsman, also had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record.

It was a fiery introduction to Test cricket for Pant, who has made his name in the Indian Premier League but was called up for the Nottingham match owing to an injury to incumbent gloveman Dinesh Karthik.

The 20-year-old, who averages 54 in first-class cricket, striking at 95, is considered one of India's most exciting young talents, and took five catches in the hosts' first innings to become the sixth keeper and first from his country to complete five (or more) dismissals in an innings on Test debut.

Meanwhile, Broad's three wickets in the first innings took his Test career tally to 427, and with two Tests still to play, the 32-year-old could conceivably move past Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath (430), New Zealander Sir Richard Hadlee (431) and India's Kapil Dev (434) into seventh position on the all-time wicket-takers list before the end of the series.

With a day remaining in the third Test, India require just one wicket to claim a convincing victory and claw their way back into the five-match contest, in which they currently trail 0-2.

Set 521 to win, England are 9-311, with tail-end pair Adil Rashid (30 not out) and James Anderson (8 not out) at the crease.
