Heat stay alive with easy victory at home

The match in a tweet: Mujeeb, Lalor and Lynn run riot as Heat keep slim playoff hopes alive by crushing Scorchers at home

The Score: Brisbane Heat 4-130 (Lynn 56no, Bryant 26; Kelly 2-27) defeated Perth Scorchers 9-128 (Hobson 43; Mujeeb 3-16, Lalor 3-23) by six wickets with 15 balls remaining

The Hero: Exciting Afghani spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman set the tone for the Heat when he picked up two wickets inside the Scorchers' powerplay and they weren't just any players he dismissed, with the teenage sensation sending back Shaun Marsh (2) and Ashton Turner (2) to leave the visitors reeling at 3-17. Then just when the Scorchers looked like they were rebuilding their innings and going to post a respectable score, he returned to the bowling crease to get rid of the dangerous Cameron Bancroft for 32. Mujeeb finished with 3-16 from his four overs and his spell was the main reason the Scorchers could only conjure up 9-128 from their 20 overs.

The Supporting Cast: It's not every day that a hat-trick plays second fiddle, but that was the case at the Gabba with Mujeeb's marvellous spell overshadowing the bizarre hat-trick that Heat seamer Josh Lalor claimed. It was the fourth hat-trick ever taken in Big Bash history (Xavier Doherty at BBL|02, Andrew Tye BBL|06 and BBL|07), but the fact Lalor didn't even know he had taken it until well after the third dismissal - due to the fact it was achieved over two different overs - meant a bit of the gloss on the feat was lost. Still, Lalor won't mind as it will still go down in the record books as a Big Bash hat-trick.

The Consolation Act: The Scorchers' score of 9-128 was never going to be enough and especially with Chris Lynn in one of his moods. The Heat skipper took a bit of time to get going, but he unleashed some superb power hitting to notch an unbeaten 56 and guide his side to victory. Unfortunately for the Heat, fellow Bash Brother Brendon McCullum (3) fell cheaply, leaving Alex Ross (8no) to join Lynn and ensure the hosts cruised home with more than two overs remaining.

The Stat: Lynn's entertaining knock helped him overtake Michael Klinger as the leading scorer in the history of the Big Bash. Klinger's 1,917 runs was overtaken by Lynn in the 10th over of the run chase and, with the Heat powerhouse still hitting them as good as ever, he might hold on to that record for some time yet.

The Black Book: Scorchers paceman Matt Kelly is definitely one to keep an eye on in the future. Kelly produced two brilliant yorkers against the Heat to dismiss Brendon McCullum and Matthew Renshaw, catching the eye of former national selector Mark Waugh in the process.

The Injury: Shaun Marsh didn't take the field during the Heat run chase, with the Scorchers veteran resting a sore hammy he hurt while running between the wickets earlier in the night. The Scorchers are hoping the injury is not bad, although the former Test batsman is likely to be sent for scans over the weekend.

The Fall Out: Mathematically the Heat can still feature in the finals, but they will need to win their final two matches of the tournament and have other results go their way. The loss for the Scorchers means the most successful team in Big Bash history look certain to finish with the dreaded wooden spoon at BBL|08. If they can find a bit of confidence over the final two matches they could still avoid it, but it's not looking good for Adam Voges's side.

The Next Stop: The Heat are back in action on Sunday night in Adelaide against the Strikers, while the Scorchers host the Stars on the same evening.
