Marnus ton leads Aussies in county

Queenslander Marnus Labuschagne made a century on debut for Glamorgan to headline the Australian contingent in the County Championship overnight.

In his first appearance in the competition, Test incumbent Labuschagne was one of three century-makers for the Welsh county side, who racked up a monster 4-433 on day one of their division two clash with Northamptonshire in Cardiff.

It ended an almost 13-month drought for the 24-year-old, whose last first-class hundred came against New South Wales in the JLT Sheffield Shield in March 2018.

Coming to the crease at 1-27 in the eighth over, Labuschagne was greeted by the familiar face of his Bulls teammate and Englishman Charlie Hemphrey, who made 28.

Labuschagne's innings then raced along in concert with that of Billy Root (126no) as the pair put on a fourth-wicket stand of 135 at 4.5 runs per over.

The Australian was eventually out for 121 from 177 deliveries, his innings including 19 fours.

Elsewhere, Test veteran Peter Siddle marked his return for Essex with figures of 4-82 from 25 overs as Surrey piled on 7-341 at The Oval in London.

Siddle didn't feature in Australia's Test team across the home summer but played both matches against Pakistan in the UAE last October, and has been talked about as a potential Ashes inclusion due to his suitability to English conditions, particularly after taking 37 wickets in just seven matches for Essex in his last UK campaign.

Queenslander Matthew Renshaw made 36 in Kent's total of 5-367 against Warwickshire, while new Durham captain Cameron Bancroft faced 159 balls in compiling 33 in his side's 8-210 against Sussex.

At Lord's, allrounder Glenn Maxwell got through 20 overs for Lancashire against Middlesex, claiming the tidy figures of 1-36 as the home side made 7-212.
