Scorchers sweating on fitness of in-form opener Patterson

The Perth Scorchers are hoping in-form Kurtis Patterson will be fit for their clash with the Melbourne Renegades after an injury scare during his game-high 78 in Hobart last night

The Perth Scorchers will be sweating on the fitness of in-form opener Kurtis Patterson ahead of their KFC BBL clash with the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium.

Patterson continued his strong season with a match-winning knock of 78 off 48 balls in the Scorchers 42-run victory over the Hobart Hurricanes on Monday night.

The result lifted the Scorchers to the top of the ladder with a perfect 4-0 record.

But the win over Hobart could come at a cost, with Patterson having to sit out the Hurricanes' batting innings due to tightness in his left quad.

Patterson bludgeons 'Canes for second BBL fifty

The 28-year-old has battled serious quad issues in the past and his availability for Wednesday's game against the Renegades will depend on how he pulls up.

"I don't have the best (history) with my quad and it pulled up a little bit tight running between the wickets," Patterson said on Fox Cricket after the match.

"We've got a game in a couple of days, so I thought it was the right option to play it safe."

Patterson notched just four games for the Scorchers in his first two seasons in the west, but he has become an integral part of the squad this campaign.

The two-Test batter posted his maiden BBL half century in the season-opening win over the Brisbane Heat, and he followed it up with another dominant display against the Hurricanes.

Patterson probably wouldn't have even been in the side for the start of the season if it wasn't for the absence of Mitch Marsh and Josh Inglis on Australia A duties.

Those two are now back in the side, but Patterson's strong form meant he simply couldn't be omitted, with Cameron Bancroft the unlucky batter to be axed.

"I thought I was going to miss out once those guys came back," Patterson said of Marsh and Inglis.

"I just tried to go out there and express myself. It's nice it's come off a couple of times."

Patterson's injury scare comes as the Renegades prepare to welcome back Australia's T20 World Cup winning captain Aaron Finch (knee) and veteran quick James Pattinson (general soreness) in Wednesday night's clash.

Finch has not played since Australia's T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE last month, while Pattinson missed the Renegades last game against the Brisbane Heat.

Both were named in the Renegades' 13-player squad on Tuesday.

Scorchers breeze past Hurricanes to stay undefeated

Shaun Marsh and Cameron Boyce are still unavailable for the Renegades because of calf injuries, with Marsh set to join the squad after Christmas.

In other BBL|11 injury news, the Heat's English import Tom Abell will miss between two to four weeks after scans on his knee revealed a lateral ligament strain.

At this stage it appears that Abell will stay with the Heat and try to return at the back end of the season rather than return home like countryman Tom Curran, who suffered a back injury while playing with the Sydney Sixers.

In better news for the Heat, allrounder Jack Wildermuth will return for their clash against the Adelaide Strikers on Thursday night after overcoming a disc issue in his back.
