Unassuming Tye focused on key improvement

Matt Wade steals the headlines but Andrew Tye's six-wicket haul highlights his advancements in 50-over format

A bittersweet slice of history repeated itself for Australia A quick Andrew Tye on Sunday but he certainly won't mind if it keeps happening.

Tye claimed 6-65 in Australia A's emphatic seven-wicket win over Derbyshire but it wasn't enough to secure player-of-the-match honours.

That award went to opening batsman Matthew Wade for his 45-ball century that ended on 155, the fastest List A hundred by an Australian.

It's the second time in Tye's career that he's taken a six-wicket haul in a 50-over clash only to be overshadowed by a brutal display of batting.

In a weird twist of fate, it was Wade's opening partner D'Arcy Short who played spoil sport first time around.

Short's mammoth 257 for Western Australia in last summer's JLT One-Day Cup stole all the headlines despite Tye taking career-best figures of 6-46 to beat Queensland at Hurstville Oval.

"It's a batsman's game, isn't it?" Tye told cricket.com.au after play.

"Overshadowed by a 160 and a 260 in 50-over games.

"That's fine, I'm not in it for accolades, so I'll just keep chugging along, keep doing my thing and give the batsmen grief for taking my awards off me."

Wade goes ballistic with record hundred

Tye was a late addition to the Australia A squad as a replacement for Kane Richardson, who replaced injured quick Jhye Richardson in Australia's World Cup squad.

Last week was the one-year anniversary of England posting 481 against Australia at Trent Bridge, which also happened to be Tye's most recent ODI, in which he recorded figures of 0-100 from nine overs.

The 32-year-old bounced back from that disastrous outing to be the equal leading wicket-taker in last summer's 50-over JLT One-Day Cup and now finds himself back in the national setup as international rivals feel the same pain he did 12 months ago.

"You look at it in the World Cup at the moment and it happens," Tye said.

"(NZ fast bowler) Matt Henry in one of the warm up games went for 110, (Afghanistan spinner) Rashid Khan's gone for (110) this World Cup as well.

"It can happen and it was just one of those days that as a bowler you try to forget but also take the lessons that you can learn out of it, and I have.

"I had a pretty good JLT (tournament) after that series and it's just trying to continue that work and progress to always get better."

While Tye used all his variations to disarm Derbyshire on Sunday, he's been told he needs to focus on improving his regulation delivery if he wants to return to the top level.

"I've been trying to be more consistent with my stock ball," he said.

"The feedback I've got from the selectors for my one-day cricket is that I've got to be more of a useful weapon in the power play and through the middle overs.

"They know I've got all the tricks but just to be able to get that consistency is something I've been working hard on through the IPL and leading into this tour."
