County side breaks shocking drought

Derbyshire had gone more than three seasons and almost four years without a win in front of their home fans

Derbyshire have got their 2018 campaign off to the perfect start by claiming a first home win in 24 attempts, beating Middlesex by 101 runs.

Middlesex's stubborn lower order took the match into the final session of day four, but Matt Critchley claimed wickets eight and nine. Debutant import Duanne Olivier (4-26) then finished the contest with the dismissal of Tim Murtagh, the South African finishing with eight victims for the match.

It was a first win on home soil since September 2014, with Derbyshire having played out three seasons without enjoying victory in front of their home fans.

The latest round of county action wrapped up on Monday across the UK, with four of the five matches producing results, while Sussex and Leicestershire played out a stalemate.

In Division One, Yorkshire proved too strong for Nottinghamshire, paceman Ben Coad taking two wickets in three balls to end the contest in the morning session and finish with match figures of 10-130.

It was the second 10-wicket haul of the 24-year-old's 16 match career.

"Ben is going from strength to strength," Yorkshire coach Andrew Gale told the BBC. "The consistency that he's got and the skills that he's got with the ball are outstanding."

At The Oval in London, hosts Surrey enjoyed a 139-run win over Hampshire, despite a fighting second-innings hundred from Sam Northeast, who looks to be heading in the right direction as one of a host of Test hopefuls for England's uncertain batting order this northern summer.

The other match in Division Two was won by Glamorgan, who prospered from Shaun Marsh's debut hundred to claim a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire.

South Australian Daniel Worrall made 50 in a losing cause in the second innings, before claiming the wicket of compatriot Marsh for a second time in the match – this time for a duck.
