Stoinis fitness set to determine Aussie XI

Mohali magician Aston Turner might have played his last game on tour after allrounder Marcus Stoinis successfully came through Australia's final training session in Delhi.

Stoinis was ruled of the fourth ODI in Mohali after fracturing his thumb fielding in the preceding match in Ranchi. His omission gave Turner a chance and he made the most of it, scoring a bruising 84 from 43 balls in a player-of-the-match performance to guide Australia to their highest-ever ODI run chase.

While Turner's heroics remain the big talking point in India, the 26-year-old could be the one to make way for Stoinis, who bowled and batted in the Feroz Shah Kotla nets on match eve of the series decider as Australia aim for the first ODI series win on Indian soil in decade.

On several occasions Stoinis spoke to Australia's physiotherapist and team doctor in the nets but showed no signs of pain or discomfort.

Veteran Shaun Marsh, whose late-night arrival to India saw Turner make his ODI debut in the first match in Hyderabad, has made scores of 16, 7 and 6 this series and could be in jeopardy of losing his spot should the selectors want both Stoinis and Turner in the same XI.

"It's a really good selection headache to have," said vice-captain Alex Carey.

"Ashton Turner coming in last minute and performing like he did, all of our batters are going well and the bowlers as well.

"I'll leave it up to the captain and coach to pick the winning combination hopefully for tomorrow.

"But whoever plays, we're really confident they'll do a great job."

Australia may look to make another change, depending on the pitch and Stoinis' health.

Left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff and off-spinner Nathan Lyon have swapped spots this series with both players playing two games each.

Behrendorff came in for Lyon in Mohali, but with the pitch predicted to take spin, Lyon is set to play at the venue where he took 7-94 on day one of the 2013 Test.

Should Lyon be recalled, one of Behrendorff or state teammate Jhye Richardson will likely make way, with spearhead Pat Cummins a lock after taking career-best figures of 5-70 on Sunday.

However, the fitness of Stoinis impacts the balance of the bowling attack.

With him in the side, Australia can play two specialist quicks and use his fast-medium pace to have three fast-bowling options.

If he misses out, the visitors might stick with the same attack as they did in Mohali and rely on 10 overs of spin out of allrounder Glenn Maxwell and part-timer skipper Aaron Finch.

Whichever way the XI takes shape, Carey is not concerned.

"Maxwell bowled well the game before and was really crucial for us," Carey said.

"If the wicket is spinning and turning then there's another spin option in Nathan Lyon ready to go if need be.

"We'll be flexible. The guys that have come in have done a great job.

"We'll wait and see on the fitness of Stoinis."
