Chennai deny Kings XI playoff spot

A clinical performance from Chennai saw Kings XI bow out of playoff race

Chennai Super Kings have ended Kings XI Punjab's IPL hopes with after a clinical five-wicket win on Sunday in Pune.

Punjab needed to restrict Chennai to 100 for a place in the playoffs after they were bowled out for 153 with two balls left.

But Suresh Raina's unbeaten 61 off 48 balls led Chennai to 5-159 with five balls to spare.

 

MS Dhoni smashed a six to claim victory and remain unbeaten on 16, the eighth time in his last 10 innings where he hasn't been dismissed.

Earlier, South African paceman Lungi Ngidi was the star, claiming an economical 4-10 from his four allotted overs, removing KL Rahul (7), Chris Gayle (0), Ravi Ashwin (0) and Tye (0) to earn player of the match honours.

Rahul's dismissal signalled his first single-figure score of the tournament, after the prolific batsman compiled 659 runs at an average of 54.91 to finish third on the leading run-scorers list.

Mumbai denied playoffs spot despite Cutting cameo

 

Sunrisers Hyderabad pushed Chennai to No. 2 on the leaderboard because of a better run-rate after both teams finished on 18 points.

Mumbai's defeat paired with Kings XI's loss helped Rajasthan Royals go into the playoffs with 14 points along with Kolkata Knight Riders on 16 points.

Hyderabad will take on Chennai in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday with the winner going through to the final on Sunday.

Rajasthan meets Kolkata in Eliminator 1 on Wednesday and the winner will take on the loser of Qualifier 1 on Friday for a place in the final.
