Pumped up Pattinson has Notts eyeing top spot

James Pattinson's trio of wickets and big-hitting cameo inspired Nottinghamshire who are closing in on a win that will lift them top of Division Two in the County Championship

James Pattinson had a day out at Trent Bridge, blasting a quick cameo with the bat before making decisive inroads with the ball to give Nottinghamshire the upper hand in their County Championship clash with Derbyshire.

Pattinson smashed three boundaries and a towering six over deep backward square in his 13-ball knock of 21 from No. 9 as Notts piled up 358, a first-innings lead of 98.

Pattinson was caught on the rope trying for a second successive six to be the fourth wicket for Nick Potts, who's 4-50 was the 19-year-old's best return in his third first-class match.

Bowling in tandem with recalled England seamer Stuart Broad, Pattinson went wicketless in his new-ball spell while Broad had Pakistan opener Shan Masood pinned in front for a three-ball duck.

Derbyshire had erased the deficit but a snorter of a delivery from Pattinson saw Luis Reece caught behind to pin them back before a late-order fightback.

Liam Hurt blasted Broad for a series of boundaries before Pattinson removed the allrounder for 49, having him caught behind.

And Alex Hughes was bowled by the Victorian one short of his half-century to give Pattinson figures of 3-59 from 21 overs.

Nottinghamshire need 162 more on the final day to secure a win that would be their fourth of the season and return them to the top of Division Two before the first-class season breaks for the T20 Blast early rounds.

Peter Siddle claimed four wickets for Somerset, but the side's second innings disaster saw them bowled out for 69 as Hampshire completed a10-wicket win inside three days at Taunton.

Siddle claimed three wickets on the third day to finish with -80 from 25.3 overs, but Hampshire had managed to turn a 67-run deficit at the start of the day into a 69-run lead by the time they were bowled out for 280.

Queensland's in-form Matthew Renshaw was the second wicket to fall in Somerset's second innings, trapped on the crease to be leg before for 11 as Keith Barker claimed 6-27 in an unbroken 13-over spell.

Nathan McAndrew claimed the second four-wicket haul of his stint with Warwickshire, but his side face a battle to avoid defeat by Yorkshire after a second top-order failure in the match.

McAndrew claimed 4-111 from 34.3 overs to go with the 4-85 he claimed against Lancashire earlier this month.

The South Australia quick had Adam Lyth caught behind to remove the century maker for 145 and next over was the safe hands under a catch that saw Dom Bess depart for 1.

Later in his spell McAndrew had Jordan Thompson's wicket after an excellent catch at mid-on after last summer's Hobart Hurricanes import he had hammered a pull shot.

McAndrew's spell after lunch saw him uproot the off-stump of Harry Duke for 48, and ended the innings bowling Steven Patterson for 18 with Yorkshire on 449, a first-innings advantage of 205.

Warwickshire finished the day 3-57 after a burst from Thompson saw him claim all three wickets to fall.

New England Test skipper Ben Stokes claimed four wickets for Durham, but his skills with the bat will likely be needed by his county after they slumped to 3-18 against Middlesex, still trailing by 47 after three days.

Middlesex's Victorian skipper Peter Handscomb was only able to add 14 before he was bowled around his legs by seam bowler Ben Raine in the morning session.

The Sydney-born former England Test opener Sam Robson continued his hot streak with 84, falling 16 short of a third successive County Championship century, while a strong lower-order showing helped push Middlesex to 422.

Stokes delivered a fiery initial spell from the Nursery End at Lord's, having already dismissed Mark Stoneman the previous evening, then had Josh De Caires caught behind.

He returned later to wrap up the innings with the wickets of Luke Hollman and Tim Murtagh to finish with 4-72 from 21.2 overs.

Toby Roland-Jones then claimed three wickets to ram home Middlesex's advantage.

Matthew Kelly played his nightwatchman role to perfection, but his Northamptonshire side are still in danger of being asked to follow on against Kent.

After Kent piled up 9-519dec, WA quick Kelly resumed at No.4 with Northants 2-21 and was resolute in putting on partnership of 61 with skipper Ricardo Vasconcelos.

Kelly fell for 25, trapped leg before by Matthew Quinn, and Northants ended the day 7-347, still trailing Kent by 172 runs.
