Stoinis explodes for century as WA open season with a win

WA send an early Marsh Cup warning after a dominant display with bat and ball to crush Victoria by 125 runs

Marcus Stoinis has made an early statement of intent with his six-laden unbeaten century highlighting a hefty Marsh One-Day Cup win for Western Australia over Victoria in the season opener in Perth.

Victoria were rolled for 261 on Saturday off 39.2 overs as WA collected a 125-run win over the cup holders at the WACA Ground.

Stoinis goes ballistic to smash brilliant last-ball ton

Stoinis cast aside a modest World Cup campaign in England with an extraordinary display of hitting that yielded seven sixes, including four off a 28-run Scott Boland over.

Despite arriving at the crease in the 33rd over, Stoinis turned on the afterburners to reach his ton with a six off the last ball of the innings to reach 101 off just 58 balls and take WA to 8-386.

'What a way to bring up your hundred!'

In reply, Victoria went hard from the outset, with Aaron Finch taking 17 off the opening over, before the Australian one-day captain went for 33 off 16 balls.

The Vics remained in the contest as Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson put on a hard-hitting 94 off 10.3 overs for the fifth wicket.

But Maxwell fell for 51 off 35 balls, and Maddinson's dismissal for 87 off 80 signalled the beginning of the end for the Vics.

The run-scoring tone was set from the start as WA opener Josh Philippe cracked a four from the first ball of the summer.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was eventually dismissed for 61 from 43 balls, while captain Ashton Turner also found his rhythm with 52 off 49.

There was joy for dropped Ashes batsman Cameron Bancroft, who posted a confident 78 from 75 deliveries, before being caught on the boundary seeking a third six.
