Renshaw issues Ashes reminder

Left-hander scores impressive century in England and receives support from a former Australia Test quick

Ashes hopeful Matthew Renshaw returned to form with a century for Kent in their one-day cup match against Sussex in England on Sunday.

Renshaw failed to reach triple figures during a disappointing Sheffield Shield campaign with Queensland, but issued a timely reminder to national selectors with an impressive knock at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham.

Coming in at number three, the left-hander hit nine fours and four sixes as he amassed 109 from just 111 deliveries to help Kent compile a more than handy 298 from their allotted 50 overs.

That score wasn't enough though, as Philip Salt hit an unbeaten 137 to ensure Sussex registered the victory.

Ashes hopefuls in Australia A squad

Renshaw missed out on selection for Australia A's tour of England in June and July, but chief selector Trevor Hohns said the Queenslander remains on the radar for an Ashes callup.

"We made it well known to everybody around the country that we may leave players who have county contracts playing county cricket," Hohns said recently

"That will not affect their chances of being chosen in the Ashes squad or the Australia-Australia A game. That’s been very made clear to them."

Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie remains a big fan of Renshaw and believes the left-hander should still be in the Test side.

Gillespie took to social media on Monday morning to support Renshaw's national case.

A handful of other Australian Ashes hopefuls were also in action in England's domestic cricket competition overnight, with Daniel Worrall and Marnus Labuschagne making an impression with the ball.

Worrall picked up 2-30 from six tidy overs, while also contributing 12 not out with the bat as Gloucestershire fell to a six-wicket loss to Middlesex.

At Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Labuschagne made up for a poor innings of one with the bat for Glamorgan against Somerset to contribute 3-46 from 10 overs with his more than handy leg spin.

His efforts were in vain, as Somerset picked up a narrow two-run triumph.

Allrounder Glenn Maxwell was more successful with the Australian limited overs star playing in a thrilling one-run victory for Lancashire against Yorkshire.

Maxwell made 22 from 26 deliveries with the bat at Headingley, before picking up the valuable wicket of Yorkshire captain Adam Lyth for 19 to finish with figures of 1-42 from seven overs.

Josh Poysden was run out on the final ball of the match when attempting a second run that would have tied the scores as Maxwell's side held on for the victory.

Paceman James Pattinson also played overnight, with the Victorian finishing with 0-38 from five overs as Nottinghamshire cruised to a six-wicket triumph over Derbyshire at The County Ground in Derby.
