Froffs or flat whites: Marsh's Xmas wait

Allrounder and Peter Handscomb waiting to learn Boxing Day fate for third Test against India

Australian vice-captain Mitch Marsh expects a nervous four-day wait before he learns his Boxing Day Test fate.

Despite a run of low scores that continued on Thursday night in his return to the KFC BBL, there is speculation Marsh could be recalled for the third Domain Test against India if the MCG pitch demands an extra bowling option.

Renegades start BBL|08 with a bang

Marsh is adamant he can deliver if recalled, saying he feels like he is on the verge of a big score despite his recent run of outs.

"I will either be having a coffee or a couple of froffies (beers)," he said when asked about his plans for Christmas Day.

"I've been in and out of the team for years, so you just get used to it.

"I will prepare to the best of my ability and that's all I can control.

"I've said it a few times now - I'm feeling really good, the way I'm hitting the ball.

"It's just about getting the opportunity and if I do get in, cashing in on the big one.

"That's what I haven't been able to do in the last couple of weeks, but ultimately I'm still feeling really confident if I get the opportunity."

If Marsh is selected, he's likely to come into the side in place of Victorian Peter Handscomb, who's scored 68 runs in the opening two Tests.

On Thursday night, Test great Shane Warne doubled down on his calls for Handscomb to be dropped for Boxing Day, saying selectors need to "do him a favour" so he can work on his game away from the international spotlight.

"I don't think it's fair to keep playing him," Warne told Fox Cricket.

"As a Victorian, I'd love to say, 'go on Peter, get the chance'. But I think Mitchell Marsh will get the nod."

Marsh was released to captain Perth Scorchers on Thursday night but managed just three with the bat before aiming a big shot and being caught at mid-wicket.

It follows a frustrating run in the JLT Sheffield Shield where a magnificent 151 came amongst a string of middling scores where he made starts but not capitalised.

Ponting looks forward to Boxing Day

"I was really excited about (Thursday) night and probably my shot showed how excited I was," he said.

"I usually like to give myself a bit more time to get in and I was just really amped - that's a good lesson for me.

"That shot early in my innings is not in my game plan."

Marsh said it hurt to be dropped for the first Test against India, but added his form meant he was vulnerable to the axe.

"I wasn't necessarily surprised. I went in there with the attitude that I was going to be playing, so I was disappointed," he said.

"But I try to tell myself that I always have the team first."
