WBBL|05: The run home for each club

Five teams remain in contention for four finals spots as the end of the regular season approaches

1st: Brisbane Heat (18 points)

Played 12 | Won 9 | Lost 3 | NRR 0.799

The run home

Nov 27 v Renegades (home, AB Field)

Dec 1 v Stars (away, Junction Oval)

The defending champions are in a commanding position with two games remaining and are a very good chance to host the finals weekend for the first time. After six straight games outside Queensland they return home to host the Renegades, before another trip to Melbourne to play the Stars. Win both matches and they’ll be in the box seat, with the Strikers needing to beat the Sixers twice and boost their net run rate.

2nd: Adelaide Strikers (18 points)

Played 12 | Won 9 | Lost 3 | NRR 0.602

The run home

Nov 30 v Sixers (away, Hurstville Oval)

Dec 1 v Sixers (away, Hurstville Oval)

It’s worth noting that in four seasons the Strikers have never beaten the Sixers. There’s never been a better time for them to make history, with the potential to host the WBBL Finals Weekend on offer. Equal on points with the Heat, they just need to win, and win well to give themselves the best possible chance of taking out top spot.

3rd: Perth Scorchers (16 points)

Played 12 | Won 8 | Lost 4 | NRR 0.039

The run home

Nov 30 v Hurricanes (home, Lilac Hill)

Dec 1 v Hurricanes (home, Lilac Hill)

Back-to-back wins over the Sydney Sixers at Lilac Hill have set the Scorchers up beautifully for a tilt at finals. They can consolidate their position with two games at home against the Hurricanes to come and can only be knocked out if they lose both and the Renegades win all their remaining games. Their biggest concern will be the fact they lose star English pair Amy Jones and Nat Sciver to international duties for finals, so they'll be keen to give game time to those who will need to step up in their absence.

4th: Sydney Sixers (12 points)

Played 12 | Won 6 | Lost 6 | NRR 0.006

The run home

Nov 30 v Strikers (home, Hurstville Oval)

Dec 1 v Strikers (home, Hurstville Oval)

It's almost hard to believe the all-conquering Sixers are in this position after their dominant run over the past few years. But a few injuries - including to star captain Ellyse Perry - have exposed problems with the depth in the Sixers squad and for the first time since WBBL|01, when they lost their first six games before storming up the table all the way into the final, they have lost four matches on the trot. To ensure they feature in the semi-finals, they need to beat the in-form Strikers at Hurstville this weekend, preferably twice to take the Renegades and net run rate out of the equation.

5th: Melbourne Renegades (10 points)

Played 11 | Won 5 | Lost 6 | NRR -0.051

The run home

Nov 27 v Heat (away, AB Field)

Nov 30 v Stars (home, Junction Oval)

Dec 1 v Thunder (home, Junction Oval)

A narrow defeat to the Stars last weekend could come back to bite the Renegades, who now face an uphill battle to qualify for finals. They face a very tough task taking on the Heat in Brisbane, but do have two winnable matches to follow against the Thunder and Stars. They will need to win at least two – preferably three - and hope the Sixers drop both their remaining matches.

6th: Sydney Thunder (9 points)

Played 12 | Won 4 | Lost 6 | NR 1 | NRR -0.526

The run home

Nov 27 v Stars (home, Manuka Oval)

Dec 1 v Renegades (away, Junction Oval)

The Thunder still have faint hopes of making the final four but need everything to go their way, including both the Renegades and Sixers dropping all their remaining games. They next meet the Stars, who are out of the running, in Canberra on Wednesday, but will be without allrounder Nida Dar who has been called away on Pakistan duties. For their other international players, the chance to play at two venues which will host matches during the upcoming T20 World Cup will be handy.

7th: Hobart Hurricanes (7 points)

Played 12 | Won 3 | Lost 8 | NR 1 | NRR -0.238

The run home

Nov 30 v Scorchers (away, Lilac Hill)

Dec 1 v Scorchers (away, Lilac Hill)

The Hurricanes will be left wondering what might have been from WBBL|05 after coming so close on so many occasions, only to find themselves out of the running for finals. Small moments and a few tactical errors have cost them, but their final two matches are a chance to keep developing a playing group that should largely remain intact next season.

Tryon's tremendous knock goes in vain

8th: Melbourne Stars (4 points)

Played 11 | Won 2 | Lost 9 | NRR -0.752

The run home

Nov 27 v Thunder (away, Manuka Oval)

Nov 30 v Renegades (home, Junction Oval)

Dec 1 v Heat (home, Junction Oval)

It’s season over for the Stars, but they still have a chance to end the tournament on a high note and cause some problems for the top teams in the process. They’ve picked up one upset win over local rivals the Renegades and you can guarantee they will be after another come Saturday.
