Lyon's praise for spin coach

Spinner thrives under eye of specialist tutelage

Nathan Lyon has praised the influence of having a specialised spin bowling coach travel with the Ashes squad as Australia's spinner closes in on his 100th Test wicket.

Lyon has 95 Test wickets at 33.04 – and 10 at 31.4 in the Commonwealth Bank Ashes series – but isn't concerned if the milestone comes in Melbourne or Sydney, as long as the Australians complete a series whitewash of England.

"If I get there (100 Test wickets) it will be a great achievement but we're worried about getting a four-nil result here," said Lyon. "And then when I've finished my career I'll worry about my results.

"I just want to keep bowling well and keep contributing to Australian cricket and hopefully if I play my role and everyone plays their role then we'll get our result we want."

National Cricket Centre spin coach John Davison is with the Australia squad in Melbourne ahead of the Boxing Day Test, and worked closely with Lyon at the Gabba and Adelaide.

Lyon said it was "awesome" to have a specialist spin coach to work with, alongside Australia's overall bowling coach Craig McDermott.

"It's been fantastic to have him (Davison) travel with us," said Lyon. "Davo is the one person I really trust and I've got a fantastic relationship with him. He knows my technique inside out and he's one that can come up and give me honest feedback when I need it. "

Some of that honest feedback came after Adelaide, where Lyon admits he was at less than his best.

"I realise Adelaide didn't come to plan, but we've moved on from that and I'm really happy with the way the ball came out in Perth," said Lyon.

"That's my biggest goal, to keep being consistent and I want to keep getting better. Keep training hard, keep working hard and hopefully consistency will come with that and I can keep enjoying it."

Lyon was dropped for the first two Tests of the Ashes series in England earlier this year in favour of Ashton Agar, but regained his spot after the nadir of Australia's 347 hiding in four days at Lord's. Now, with Australia looking to field an unchanged line-up for the fourth consecutive Test, Lyon is thriving with the job security.

"I'm definitely confident in my own skill to get the job done, no doubt about that," he said. "There's a great feeling in the team at the moment, everyone is playing well together and wants each other to do well.

"If we can keep bowling dot balls, keep building pressure and keep being consistent as a bowling group hopefully things are going to crack open there.

"It's not rocket science, we know if we keep building pressure and dot balls something is going to happen, something is going to give, so we've got to be good enough to keep building the pressure and take the opportunity."
