Ben Stokes was fuming after being run out at Lord's but it had nothing to do with the combustible allrounder's inability to slide his bat.
Stokes sizzles after shocking run-out
Stokes was dismissed for a duck in farcical scenes at Lord's on Sunday, when Australia steamrolled their way to a 405-run win.
Mitchell Johnson threw the stumps down with a direct hit, but Stokes would have made his ground if he'd followed the most basic tenet of running between the wickets.
As English commentators lamented the shocking schoolboy error, Stokes held his arms up in disbelief.
It's understood the 24-year-old's frustration was not directed at his brain fade, rather England teammate Joe Root.
Root had called Stokes through for a quick single.
"Stokesy was filthy," England coach Trevor Bayliss said.
Replay: Every England wicket in second innings collapse (Aus only)
"He's only got to look at the replay and I think he'll realise all he had to do was slide the bat and he would have been home.
"Whether he thought there was a run in it or not, or he thought he should have been called through for a run or not."
Alastair Cook noted Stokes will "only do it once", while Bayliss believed it was a good example of why his players need to get the basics right against Australia.
"That's a lesson for a young player I suppose. Those little things count ... all the time," Bayliss said.
"Certainly the Australians hit the stumps quite often and they can take advantage of those little mistakes."
Full and straight wreaks havoc for the Aussies
England also served up substandard batting and bowling, but Bayliss is not the sort of coach to read the riot act to players.
"I very rarely bear the teeth," Bayliss said.
"As long as the players are giving their utmost, I'm not going to get angry, and I very rarely get angry anyway.
"There's no use yelling and screaming at players. They know they haven't played well in this game."
Bayliss, renowned for his sense of calm, sensed it may have been too quiet in the changerooms as England collapsed to be all out for 103.
"Maybe we need to change that a little bit," he said.
