Frustration for Hurricanes' Sammy

West Indies allrounder Darren Sammy has spoken of his frustrating summer with the Hobart Hurricanes as it comes to crunch time for KFC Big Bash League finals hopefuls.

In a narrow one-run loss to Perth Scorchers on Sunday at Blundstone Arena, Sammy (28 not out) posted his top score for the Hurricanes this season but just missed helping his side to victory.

Needing six from the last two balls, Sammy belted one boundary, with the Hurricanes finishing 6-172 in reply to the visitor's 5-173.

"We really knew what was at stake and close was not good enough, we had to win and unfortunately we didn't do that," he told reporters, adding that he and teammates were left feeling bitter about the loss.

For Sammy, who's playing his second BBL season with the Hurricanes, 2015-16 hasn't seen the West Indian at his best.

From six innings, he's scored two, seven, 18, nine, 17 and 28.

His bowling efforts have bagged just one wicket.

Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, playing his first season for the Hurricanes, is also scratching for form, with four single-digit contributions and a top score of 43.

"You come as an overseas player, you want to have an impact straight away," Sammy said.

"Last year, my first game I did that, this year it's not been the same."

While No.3 Sangakkara has struggled to get started at the crease, Sammy said his teammate is obviously capable and has just been unlucky.

In Sammy's case, he has mostly come in with only a handful of overs remaining.

"At the end of the day, when a franchise invest in you it's what you do on the cricket field, the performance, (that's important) and it's been a little bit frustrating," he said.

"When you bat in that position it's always difficult to just come in and go at the ball."

The Hurricanes on Wednesday face ladder leaders Adelaide Strikers and must win for a chance to finish in the top four.

"We go to Adelaide where it's going to be a tough game," Sammy said.

"All we can do is try to get eight points and let's pray that the cricket gods are smiling on us and we still get a chance to qualify."
