The squads for the National Championships in Queensland are in with Sangha and couple of familiar names set to take part
Sangha leads Under-17 squad announcements
NSW Blues and Sydney Thunder rookie Jason Sangha will headline the talent on show at the 2016 National Under-17 Male Championships, which kick off in Queensland later this month.
The 16-year-old from Newcastle became the youngest-ever player contracted by New South Wales when the Blues offered him a rookie deal in April, and he will captain ACT/NSW Country in the two-week tournament.
The host venues for the Championships were announced today, with the first four rounds to be played in Maroochydore, Caloundra and Landsborough, and the final round - plus the tournament's finals - to be played in Brisbane.
The competition begin on the Sunshine Coast on September 26 and culminate in the final at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field on October 6.
The Championships will also feature the Cricket Australia XI, selected based on performances at the 15-and-under National Championships in February this year and including players from New South Wales (four), Queensland (two), South Australia (one), Victoria (three) and Western Australia (three).
The squad will be coached by former England international representative Dimitri Mascarenhas.
Victorian teenager Mackenzie Harvey, the nephew of former Australia all-rounder Ian Harvey, has been named among a talent-packed group.
Cricket Australia’s National Talent Manager, Greg Chappell, said it was a great test for the young players selected.
“We believe this tournament will help fast-track the development of these players to enable them the best chance of becoming future elite cricketers.”
“Last year was the first time a CA XI competed in the under-17 championships.
“The side won four matches, reaching the semi-finals, and there were a number of outstanding individual performances which was really pleasing to see.
“This is a great opportunity for these highly-talented young players to challenge themselves against the best under-17 cricketers in the country.”
Sangha was one of the stars of last year’s edition of the Championships as a bottom-age player representing the Cricket Australia XI, compiling 310 runs, including four half-centuries.
The right-hander followed that up with a phenomenal Under-19 Championships as a 16-year-old, scoring a century and two half centuries for the CA XI.
Nine of the ten sides have been named for this year’s Under-17 Championships, with the CA XI still to be announced.
Austin Waugh, the son of former Australia Test captain Steve, will represent NSW Metro after averaging 48.25 for the CA XI in last year's Under-17 Championship, while Victoria’s Zak Evans, who was the CA XI’s leading wicket-taker with 12 scalps in that edition, has been named in the VIC Metro side.
Eleven of last year’s 13 CA XI players have been named to represent their respective states this year, including VIC Metro bowler Will Sutherland, who claimed five wickets last year and is the son of Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland.
Queensland will chase back-to-back titles but retain just two members of their title-winning squad - Lachlan Prince, who scored three half-centuries including 70 in the final last year, and Ben Maynard - remaining.
The teams will be split into two pools of five, with NSW Metro, ACT/NSW Country, WA, NT and VIC Country in Pool A, and SA, VIC Metro, QLD, TAS and the CA XI in Pool B.
