Kiwis new T20 No.1, Aussies continue ODI reign

A change at the top of the T20 team rankings, but the ODI World Champions remain safe at No.1

New Zealand have jumped into top position in the International Cricket Council's Twenty20 rankings while Australia have retained No.1 spot in the one-day charts following today’s annual update.

However, Australia’s lead at the top of the ODI rankings has decreased by two points as a result of the update, with the reigning World Champions now holding an 11-point lead over the second-ranked Black Caps.

The ICC’s ranking system works on a four year cycle, with today's update meaning results in 2012-13 are no longer included in calculating the ODI and T20 rankings, while results from 2014-15 are only weighted at 50 per cent.

South Africa moved into third position in the ODI rankings, swapping places with India, while West Indies have exchanged places with Pakistan, pushing the latter out of the top eight.

But the biggest moves came in the T20 rankings, where ICC World Twenty20 semi-finalists New Zealand stormed up the chart to claim number-one position for the first time.

Kane Williamson’s side gained 12 points following the annual update, leaping two places to join India on 132 points. Once ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point, the Black Caps inch ahead of India by +0.21.

The Black Caps have won 10 of their last 14 T20Is and were the form team during the group stage of the World T20, notching up wins over India, Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh before bowing out to England in the first semi-final in Delhi.

Despite winning the tournament in India last month, the West Indies have slipped to third, with results from their outstanding season – which included victory in 2012 World T20 – no longer included.

The Windies dropped from second to third and now sit three points ahead of fourth-ranked South Africa.

World T20 runners-up England dropped one place to fifth, while Australia did not shift from their position at sixth.
