Malinga returns for SL's Trophy opener

Sri Lanka skipper out with injury but key quick returns, as the Islanders win the toss and opt to bowl first against Proteas

Sri Lanka slinger Lasith Malinga will make his long-awaited return to the one-day international arena after being named in Sri Lanka's Champions Trophy opener against South Africa at the Oval.

But Sri Lanka will be without regular captain Angelo Mathews, who suffered a calf injury in the lead-in to the side's first match of the tournament.

Standing in Mathews' place, Upul Tharanga won the toss and opted to bowl first at the London venue, a decision Proteas skipper AB de Villiers admitted he would have replicated had the coin fallen in his favour.

South Africa have selected Morne Morkel in a pace-attack featuring the International Cricket Council's top-ranked bowler Kagiso Rabada and leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

Malinga will play his first ODI since November 2015.
