Final-over hat-trick seals win for Pune

Steve Smith gets the better of his Australia deputy David Warner in a thriller

A hat-trick in the final of the match to Jaydev Unadkat delivered Rising Pune Supergiant a 12-run win over defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.

Unadkat bagged 5-30 which featured a triple-wicket maiden in the final over of Hyderbad's run chase to put Pune in pole position for a playoff berth.

The left-armer removed Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to complete his hat-trick and take his career IPL wicket tally to 100.

The match was evenly poised heading into the final over after Yuvraj Singh (47) and David Warner (40) had put the hosts needing 13 runs from the last six balls of the pursuit.

But Unadkat, having removed Yuvraj in the 18th over, held his nerve to ice the game for the visitors.

The win moved Steve Smith's charges into second place on 16 points (8 wins, 4 losses), two points behind Mumbai Indians (9 wins, 2 losses) who have a game in hand after pulverising Delhi.

Hyderabad sit in fourth spot, three points clear of Kings XI Punjab, but Glenn Maxwell's men have two matches up their sleeve to leapfrog the 2016 champions.

Warner won the toss against his national captain and elected to bowl first on his home turf.

Smith, who has been in excellent touch for what seems the past three years, struggled to find rhythm on Saturday, failing to hit a boundary in his 39-ball 34.

England allrounder Ben Stokes had no problem finding the rope as he cracked three sixes over it before a bizarre run of events saw him depart for 39.

Facing Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, Stokes charged down the wicket, edged the ball but wicketkeeper Naman Ojha fumbled the catch and missed the stumping to boot.

With all his luck used up the ball prior, Stokes missed a hoick and was castled by Khan the following delivery.

A late flurry by MS Dhoni lifted Pune to 8-148, with Siddarth Kaul the pick of the Sunrisers bowlers with 4-29.

In reply, Warner, opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and first-drop Kane Williamson were all removed by Stokes by the 13th over.

Warner's 34-ball 40 featured four fours and a lone six, but his score was one of just three to reach double figures.

As wickets tumbled Yuvraj stood tall, clocking four boundaries and two maximums to carry the home side's hopes on his shoulders.

But his dismissal in the 18th over with 22 still required brought Pune right back into the contest.

From there it was all Unadkat, who put in a colossal effort worthy of a Supergiant to silence the Hyderabad crowd and secure the win for his teammates.
