New Zealand question a controversial dismissal which saw the third umpire overturn a 'soft signal' of not out to send star Sophie Devine packing
NZ to seek answers over Devine dismissal
New Zealand say they will seek answers from the match referee following a controversial dismissal in Australia's victory at North Sydney Oval on Saturday night.
The White Ferns were on the wrong end of a tight decision in the 10th over of their innings when third umpire Shawn Craig ruled that Australian fielder Beth Mooney had cleanly taken a catch to dismiss Kiwi star Sophie Devine.
Devine cut a wide ball to Mooney at point, who dove forward and claimed the catch, although she quickly indicated she wasn't entirely sure if the ball had carried.
The on-field officials gave a 'soft signal' of not out, but after multiple replays and a lengthy delay, Craig deemed there was enough evidence to overturn the on-field call and gave Devine out.
The right-hander was flying on 43 from 33 balls at the time and Kiwi coach Haidee Tiffen said it was a crucial moment in the match.
"I was disappointed with the decision," Tiffen said. "From our point of view we felt that it bounced and maybe it had an impact on the game.
"I will be speaking to the match referee after this just to get some clarification. I did go and see him afterwards and I understand that they were halfway through the job, but I did want to get some clarification as to why that decision was made.
"I think it did impact the match and I'm disappointed with the decision. And I will seek some clarification around that."
Australian vice-captain Rachael Haynes was fielding next to Mooney when the catch was taken and was firm in her belief that it was a fair dismissal.
"I was two metres from it and there was no doubt in my mind that it carried," she said.
"I know that it didn't look great front-on on TV, but I thought Beth definitely got her hand under it and it carried."
Haynes was at the centre of a controversial umpiring decision in a match between the trans-Tasman rivals 18 months ago. The Australian was sent on her way after Kiwi keeper Rachel Priest claimed a catch behind the stumps that local commentators immediately cast doubt over. But with no third umpire available for the series, the on-field decision stood.
