Black Caps spearhead bowls full and fast with late movement to claim New Zealand's first ever World Cup hat-trick
Boult's World Cup hat-trick makes Kiwi history
New Zealand speedster Trent Boult has taken the first one-day international hat-trick at Lord's and his second in less than a year after delivering a brilliant trio of yorkers in the final over of Australia's innings in their World Cup clash on Saturday.
After removing Usman Khawaja for a crucial hand of 88 off 129 balls, Boult then snared the scalps of tailenders Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff for golden ducks to seal the milestone.
While all three batters were chasing late runs, the left-armer could hardly have bowled three better deliveries to finish off an innings.
Khawaja stepped across his crease in a bid to work the ball to the leg-side but went too far as Boult clipped his leg stump.
Starc, who delivered one of the better yorkers in World Cup history in Australia's last game against England, got a taste of his own medicine when he had his middle-stump knocked back.
With the Lord's crowd buzzing, Boult ran in and fired in another stump-seeker that Behrendorff could do little about but get his back foot in the way. His review proved futile as Boult sealed the Black Caps' first hat-trick at a World Cup.
"Any fast bowler's dream is to get three in a row anywhere but to do it out at Lord's against Australia is a pretty cool feeling," said Boult.
"It was a pretty simple game-plan - just try to hit the bottom of the stumps and big 'Dorff' got his foot in the way of it... he told me it hurt his foot, so that was good.
"There was a bit of entertainment there for a second with a cheeky referral but it was nice to see three red (lights) come up."
He could have had a fourth victim on the final ball of the innings when Nathan Lyon attempted an audacious ramp, but both bowler and batter missed their targets, with the Aussies finishing on 9-243.
A hat-trick is among the hardest feats to achieve at any level of cricket, but Boult remarkably now has two in seven months, having dismissed Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez in consecutive deliveries in an ODI against Pakistan in November.
India paceman Mohammad Shami took the first hat-trick of this World Cup against Afghanistan last week.
